| << Back to the Archive If you're a beginner to hand sewing or cross-stitch embroidery, the choice of needle types can be overwhelming.
Tightly woven fabrics need a sharper needle to penetrate the weave. Never use a, a sharp needle on a loose fabric – holy moly that’s asking for nasty accidental holes! How do you tell if a fabric is tight or loosely woven? If you hold the fabric up to the light and cannot see distinct holes, you probably need a sharp needle, otherwise, use a blunt tip.
A embroidery or cross-stitch pattern should tell you what type of thread you should use, and how many strands to use together. If you are not sure, consult a thread coverage guide. Many of the thread manufacturers have these on their websites. You should use the smallest eye possible for the thread, to avoid stretching large holes into your work. Basically, your thread determines the size of the needle’s eye required.
Not in the meaning of life way, but in terms of this project. What are you trying to achieve here? This is important. Regardless of your fabric, you need different needles for different purposes. The following examples are relevant:
Get some of your thread and fabric and experiment on a scrap before launching into the main project. Essentially, use what works for you! |
