Even those who have been needleworkers for a long time like to try new materials for new inspiration. Wool gives beautiful results for embroiderers who like deep texture and colour in their work. Stitching with such a soft, nurturing thread allows for a true piece of art to emerge between your fingers. Here are some hints for getting started.
If you are having trouble threading the needle, try the following:
-
Moisten the end of the yarn
-
Cut a piece of paper a few centimetres long which fits through the eye of the needle. Fold the paper in half and position the end of the yarn inside the folded paper against the fold. Push the paper and yarn through the eye together
-
Flatten the yarn as much as possible
-
Use a needle with a bigger eye, but not too big that it will put holes in your work
Picking yarns and needles:
-
Needles should be a similar thickness to the yarn being used
-
Wool embroidery is best with tapestry, chenille and crewel needles
-
Tapestry wools allow your embroidery to grow quickly
-
Think about silk and mohairs for brilliant lustre
