How to Knit a Ribbed Beanie

Knit a classic ribbed beanie with a close, comfortable fit and a neatly shaped crown. This easy pattern is available in two adult sizes and uses just one 100 g ball of suitable yarn.

The beanie is worked flat on straight needles, then sewn together along the back seam.

What You Will Need

Yarn

Use one 100 g ball of any one of the following:

  • Lincraft Cosy Wool
  • Lincraft Superwash
  • Lincraft Double Knitting

Needles and Equipment

  • Pair of 4.00 mm knitting needles
  • Wool needle for sewing up

Tension

22 stitches and 30 rows to 10 cm over stocking stitch using 4.00 mm needles.

Begin the Beanie

  1. Using 4.00 mm needles, cast on 98 (106) stitches.
  2. Row 1: K2, *P2, K2; repeat from * to the end.
  3. Row 2: P2, *K2, P2; repeat from * to the end.
  4. These two rows form the rib pattern.
  5. Continue in rib until the work measures 15 (16) cm from the beginning, finishing with Row 2.

Shape the Crown

  1. Row 1: K2, *P2tog, K2, P2, K2; repeat from * to the end. 86 (93) stitches.
  2. Row 2: P2, *K2, P2, K1, P2; repeat from * to the end.
  3. Row 3: K2, *P1, K2, P2tog, K2; repeat from * to the end. 74 (80) stitches.
  4. Row 4: P2, *K1, P2; repeat from * to the end.
  5. Row 5: K2, *P1, K2tog, P1, K2; repeat from * to the end. 62 (67) stitches.
  6. Row 6: P2, *K1, P1, K1, P2; repeat from * to the end.
  7. Row 7: K2, *P1, K1, P1, K2tog; repeat from * to the end. 50 (54) stitches.
  8. Row 8: P1, *K1, P1; repeat from * to the final stitch, P1.
  9. Row 9: K2, *P1, K2tog, K1; repeat from * to the end. 38 (41) stitches.
  10. Row 10: P2, *K1, P2; repeat from * to the end.
  11. Row 11: K2, *P1, K2tog; repeat from * to the end. 26 (28) stitches.
  12. Row 12: *P2tog; repeat from * to the end. 13 (14) stitches.
  13. Row 13: K1 (0), *K2tog; repeat from * to the end. 7 stitches.

Finish the Beanie

  1. Break off the yarn, leaving a long tail.
  2. Thread the yarn through the remaining stitches using a wool needle.
  3. Draw the stitches together firmly and fasten off securely.
  4. Sew the back seam from the crown to the lower edge.
  5. Weave in all loose yarn ends.

Helpful Tips

Keep the ribbing relaxed while knitting so the finished beanie retains its stretch.

Sew the back seam using mattress stitch for a flatter, less visible finish.
