This Plain & Simple Beanie will be a perfect match to any outfit!
How to Knit the 8 Ply Plain & Simple Beanie
Knit a classic garter-stitch baby beanie with optional turn-up brim. The pattern includes five sizes from newborn to 24 months and is worked flat before the back seam is joined during finishing.
Crown shaping is created with evenly spaced decreases, while the optional brim is formed by reversing the lower section of the seam before turning it up.

Alternative Yarns
The original pattern already provides several yarn options: Lincraft Cosy Wool 8ply, Lincraft Superwash 8ply, Lincraft DK 8ply or Lincraft Supersoft 8ply. When choosing another substitute, select an 8ply or equivalent yarn that produces a similar fabric on 4.00mm needles.
Suitable Yarn Types
- 8ply wool – provides warmth and natural elasticity.
- 8ply superwash wool – offers wool warmth with easier washing.
- 8ply acrylic yarn – an easy-care option suitable for everyday baby wear.
- 8ply wool-acrylic blend – combines warmth, softness and durability.
- Soft baby 8ply yarn – suitable where a softer feel against the skin is preferred.
Customisation Ideas
- Add the optional turn-up brim by reversing the lower seam as directed in the original finishing instructions.
- Use a solid neutral colour for a classic baby beanie.
- Choose a bright or pastel shade for a more colourful version.
- Use self-striping 8ply yarn for automatic colour changes while retaining the original stitch counts.
- Add a small pom pom to the crown after completing the original pattern.
To retain the original sizing, keep all cast-on counts, decrease counts, row counts and size brackets unchanged when making decorative customisations.
Care Instructions
Follow the washing and care instructions provided on the ball band of the yarn used.

- Use gentle washing suitable for baby garments.
- Gently reshape the beanie after washing.
