How to Crochet the Spaghetti Yarn Rug

Crochet a decorative circular rug using Lincraft Spaghetti yarn in two colours. The design is worked from the centre out in joined rounds, alternating solid and open stitch sections before finishing with a scalloped outer edge.

The finished rug measures approximately 60cm, with notes in the original pattern explaining how selected round sequences can be repeated or omitted to adjust the finished width.

Crochet Hook

A 9.00mm crochet hook.

Requirements

Smaller crochet hook for sewing in ends.

Tension

Tension is not important for this project.

RUG

Using 9.00mm hook and MC, make 6ch, join with sl st to form a ring.

1st round: 3ch (counts as first tr throughout), 15tr in ring, sl st in top of 3ch to close round … 16tr.

2nd round: 3ch, 1tr in same st as sl st, 2tr in each tr to end, sl st in top of 3ch to close round … 32tr.

3rd round: Using CC, sl st to any tr, 4ch, miss next tr, * 1tr in next tr, 1ch, miss 1tr, rep from * to last tr, 1ch, sl st in 3rd of 4ch to close round.

4th round: 3ch, * 3tr in ch sp, 1tr in next tr, rep from * to last ch sp, 3tr in ch sp, sl st in top of 3ch to close round.

5th round: Using MC, sl st to any tr, 4ch, miss next tr, * 1tr in next tr, 1ch, miss 1tr, rep from * to last tr, 1ch, sl st in 3rd of 4ch to close round.

6th round: 3ch, * 1dc in next tr, 3ch, rep from * to end, sl st in top of 3ch.

7th round: Sl st in next ch sp, * 3ch, 1dc in next ch sp, rep from * to last ch sp, sl st in top of beg sl st.

8th round: Using CC, sl st to any dc, 4ch, * 1tr in next dc, 1ch, rep from * to end, sl st in 3rd of 4ch to close round.

Rep 4th to 7th rounds once.

Note: Last 5 rounds measure approx 10cm and can be repeated to make the Rug wider or omitted to make the Rug narrower.

13th round: Using CC, as 7th round.

14th round: * 1dc in next ch sp, work 3tr in next ch sp, rep from * to end, 1dc in first dc to close round.

15th round: 2ch, * miss 1tr, 3tr in next tr, miss 1tr, 1dc in next dc, rep from * to last 3tr, miss 1tr, 3tr in next tr, 1dc in top of 2ch at beg of round.

Rep 15th round once.

17th round: Using MC, sl st in any ch sp, work 3ch, 1tr in next and each ch sp to end, sl st in top of 3ch at beg of round.

18th round: 4ch, * 1tr in next tr, 1ch, rep from * to end, sl st in 3rd of 4ch at beg of round. Fasten off.

19th round: Using CC, sl st in any ch sp of previous round, 3ch, * 2tr in each ch sp, rep from * to end, sl st in top of 3ch of beg of round.

20th round: * 3ch, miss 4tr, 1dc in next sp, rep from * to end, sl st in top 3ch sp.

21st round: Sl st in next ch sp, * 4ch, 1dc in next ch sp, rep from * to end, sl st in 3rd of 4ch at beg of round.

22nd round: Sl st in next ch sp, * 5ch, 1dc in next ch sp, rep from * to end, sl st in 3rd of 5ch at beg of round. Fasten off.

23rd round: Using MC, sl st in next ch sp, * 4ch, 1dc in next ch sp, rep from * to end, sl st in sl st at beg of round.

24th round: Sl st in next ch sp, 3ch, 2tr, 2ch, 3tr, 1dc in next ch sp, * (3tr, 2ch, 3tr) in next ch sp, 1dc in next ch sp, rep from * to end, sl st in top of 3ch at beg of round. Fasten off.

Note: Rounds 17 to 22 measure approx 15cm and can be repeated to make the Rug wider if desired.

FINISHING

Sew in all ends.

Alternative Yarns

The original pattern uses Lincraft Spaghetti yarn for the main colour and a contrasting yarn for the grey sections. When choosing alternatives, select bulky yarns that work comfortably with a 9.00mm crochet hook and create a firm but flexible fabric suitable for a floor rug.

Suitable Yarn Types

  • T-shirt yarn – a suitable alternative for creating a dense, durable rug.
  • Recycled cotton tube yarn – provides structure with a contemporary finish.
  • Fabric yarn – can create a similarly substantial texture.
  • Super-chunky cotton blend – may work well provided the finished fabric lies flat and retains the circular shape.
Important: Although tension is not important for this project, changing yarn thickness or hook size may alter the approximate 60cm finished measurement. Check regularly that the rug lies flat as you work.

Customisation Ideas

  • Change the colour combination to coordinate the rug with your room décor.
  • Use two neutral shades for a softer, understated finish.
  • Use high-contrast colours to emphasise the alternating stitch sections.
  • Make the rug wider by repeating the round sequences identified in the original pattern.
  • Make the rug narrower by omitting the optional repeated section as directed in the original pattern.

Keep the original round sequence and stitch instructions unchanged when adjusting only the colour scheme. For size customisation, follow the original notes regarding the repeatable round sections.

Care Instructions

Follow the washing and care instructions provided on the ball bands of the yarns used.

  1. Sew in all ends securely before use or washing.
  2. Spot clean where practical, particularly for bulky fabric-style yarns.
  3. Use a gentle wash only if permitted by the yarn manufacturer.
  4. Avoid excessive heat that may shrink or distort cotton or recycled fibres.
  5. Reshape the rug while damp.
  6. Lay flat to dry completely to help maintain the circular shape and scalloped edging.
