How to Crochet the Cakes Shawl

Crochet a lightweight triangular shawl using Lincraft Cakes yarn. The shawl is worked in rows with regular increases along the edges, creating a gradually widening shape and allowing the self-striping yarn to form flowing colour changes across the finished piece.

The pattern is worked until almost all of the yarn has been used, making it a simple one-ball project with minimal finishing.

SHAWL

Using 5.00mm hook, make 3ch.

1st row: 2tr in first ch, turn.

2nd row: [1dc, 1ch (acts as 1tr)] in first st, 1tr in next tr, 2tr in top of 3ch, turn … 4 sts.

3rd row: [1dc, 1ch] in first st, 1tr in same st, 2tr in next st, 1tr in next st, 1tr in last st, turn … 6 sts.

4th row: [1dc, 1ch] in first st, 1tr in each of next 3tr, 2tr in each of next 2 sts, turn … 8 sts.

5th row: [1dc, 1ch] in first st, 1tr in same st, 2tr in next st, 1tr in each of next 6tr, turn … 10 sts.

6th row: [1dc, 1ch] in first st, 1tr in each of next 7tr, 2tr in each of next 2 sts, turn.

7th row: [1dc, 1ch] in first st, 1tr in same st, 2tr in next tr, 1tr in each of next 13tr, turn.

8th row: [1dc, 1tr] in first st, 1tr in each of next 11tr, 2tr in each of next 2 sts, turn.

9th row: [1dc, 1tr] in first st, 1tr in same st, 2tr in next tr, 1tr in each of next 14 sts, turn … 18 sts.

10th row: [1dc, 1tr] in first st, 1tr in each of next 15 sts, 2tr in each of next 2tr, turn.

11th row: [1dc, 1tr] in first st, 1tr in same st, 2tr in next tr, 1tr in each of next 12tr, turn … 6 sts have been missed at end of this row.

12th row: [1dc, 1tr] in first st, 1tr in each tr to last 2 sts, 2tr in each of last 2 sts, turn.

13th row: [1dc, 1ch], 1tr in same st, 2tr in next st, 1tr in each st to end, turn.

14th row: As 12th row.

15th row: As 13th row.

16th row: As 12th row.

17th row: As 13th row.

18th row: As 12th row.

19th row: [1dc, 1tr] in next st, 1tr in same st, 2tr in next tr, 1tr in each st to end, turn … 6 sts have been missed at end of this row.

20th row: As 12th row.

21st row: As 13th row.

Rep 12th and 13th rows twice, then 12th row once.

Last 8 rows form patt, noting that tr between edges will inc as work gets longer.

Cont in patt until almost out of yarn.

Fasten off.

FINISHING

Sew in all ends.

Alternative Yarns

The original pattern uses Lincraft Cakes yarn in a 200g ball. When choosing an alternative yarn, select a yarn that works comfortably with a 5.00mm crochet hook and creates a soft, draping fabric suitable for a shawl.

Suitable Yarn Types

  • Self-striping yarn – recreates the gradual colour changes of the original Cakes yarn.
  • Gradient yarn – creates long, smooth colour transitions across the growing shawl.
  • DK or light worsted acrylic – an easy-care option with good drape.

  • Cotton blend – can create a lighter shawl suitable for warmer seasons.
  • Solid colour yarn – highlights the stitch pattern and triangular shaping.
Important: Tension is not important for this project, but changing the yarn weight or hook size may alter the finished dimensions and drape. As the pattern is worked until almost out of yarn, the total metreage of a substitute will also influence the final size.

Customisation Ideas

  • Use a gradient colourway to emphasise the gradual widening of the shawl.
  • Choose a solid neutral shade for a versatile everyday accessory.
  • Alternate two colours manually to create broad or narrow stripes.
  • Add tassels to the corners after completing the original pattern.
  • Add fringe along the outer edges for additional texture.
  • Adjust the finished size by stopping earlier or continuing the established pattern with additional yarn.

Keep the original row sequence and increase pattern unchanged if you wish to retain the intended shawl shape while customising colour, edging or overall size.

Care Instructions

Follow the washing and care instructions provided on the ball band of the yarn used.

  1. Sew in all ends securely before washing.
  2. Wash using the method and temperature recommended for the selected yarn.
  3. Avoid excessive agitation when using wool or fibres prone to felting.
  4. Gently reshape the shawl after washing.
