Construction Overview

The Egg Beanie is knitted in four simple stages:

  1. Knit the ribbed brim.
  2. Work the stocking stitch body.

Knit the Beanie

  1. Using 4mm needles and MC, cast on 34 stitches.
  2. Knit 8 rows in rib:
    Use either 1x1 rib or 2x2 rib.
  3. Knit 8 rows in stocking stitch.

Shape the Crown

  1. Row 17: K1, *K6, K2tog, repeat from * to last stitch, K1.
    30 stitches remain.
  2. Row 18: Purl.
  3. Row 19: K1, *K5, K2tog, repeat from * to last stitch, K1.
    26 stitches remain.
  4. Row 20: Purl.
  5. Row 21: K1, *K4, K2tog, repeat from * to last stitch, K1.
    22 stitches remain.
  6. Row 22: Purl.
  7. Row 23: K1, *K3, K2tog, repeat from * to last stitch, K1.
    18 stitches remain.
  8. Row 24: Purl.
  9. Row 25: K1, *K2, K2tog, repeat from * to last stitch, K1.
    14 stitches remain.
  10. Row 26: Purl.
  11. Row 27: K1, *K1, K2tog, repeat from * to last stitch, K1.
    10 stitches remain.
  12. Row 28: Purl.
  13. Row 29: K2tog across the row.
    5 stitches remain.

Finish the Crown

  1. Break off yarn, leaving a long tail.
  2. Thread yarn through remaining stitches.
  3. Draw up tightly.
  4. Fasten securely.

Finishing

  1. Join the back seam using mattress stitch or a neat sewing stitch.
  2. Sew in all loose ends.
  3. Using CC, make a small pom pom.
  4. Attach the pom pom securely to the crown.
Finishing tip: When attaching the pom pom, sew through the crown several times to ensure it remains secure.
