Alternative Yarns

The original pattern uses Lincraft Kimana yarn. When choosing an alternative yarn, select a yarn that can achieve the original tension of 14 sts and 8 rows to 10cm over treble crochet using a 5.00mm hook.

Suitable Yarn Types

  • 8ply acrylic yarn – an easy-care option with a wide range of colours.
  • 8ply wool blend – provides warmth, softness and elasticity.
  • Machine-washable 8ply wool – suitable for a warm everyday beanie.
  • Self-striping yarn – recreates the multicoloured rainbow effect without manual colour changes.
  • Variegated yarn – creates blended colour changes throughout the rounds.
Important: Match the original tension before beginning. A different tension may change the finished head circumference and depth of the beanie.

Customisation Ideas

  • Use a rainbow or self-striping yarn to create gradual colour changes throughout the beanie.
  • Choose a solid colour for a simpler version that highlights the crochet texture.
  • Make the pom pom in a contrasting colour for a bolder finish.
  • Use a tonal variegated yarn for softer colour transitions.
  • Omit the pom pom for a simpler crown finish after completing the original beanie.

To retain the original adult fit, keep the stitch counts, increase rounds and number of repeated rounds unchanged when making colour customisations.

Care Instructions

Follow the washing and care instructions provided on the ball band of the yarn used.

  1. Sew in all ends securely before washing.
  2. Check that the pom pom is firmly attached before and after washing.
  3. Wash using the method and temperature recommended for the selected yarn.
  4. Avoid excessive agitation when using wool or fibres prone to felting.
  5. Gently reshape the beanie after washing.
  6. Lay flat to dry where appropriate to help maintain the finished fit.
