A679 Crochet Clutch

Create Crochet Clutch using our line of Spaghetti Yarns. Looks super chic and unique!

How to Crochet a Clutch Bag

Create a stylish handmade crochet clutch using chunky Lincraft Spaghetti yarn and craft rings. This modern circular design combines crochet with a felt lining to create a structured accessory that is both practical and eye-catching.

The clutch is made by crocheting two circular panels, attaching them to craft rings and adding a felt lining. A long crochet chain strap completes the design.

Approximate project time: 2+ hours

What You Will Need

Materials

  • 1 ball Lincraft Spaghetti Yarn
  • 2 x 250mm craft rings
  • A4 felt sheet
  • Yarn in a similar colour to the felt

Equipment

  • 7mm crochet hook
  • Wool needle

Alternative Yarns

This clutch is designed using Lincraft Spaghetti Yarn, which creates a structured crochet fabric with a modern chunky appearance. When selecting an alternative yarn, choose a thick yarn that can support the shape of the bag.

  • T-shirt Yarn – creates a similar chunky, structured finish.
  • Super Bulky Yarn – suitable for creating a firm statement accessory.
  • Multiple strands of DK or 8ply yarn held together – can create a thicker yarn substitute.
  • Chunky Cotton Yarn – provides structure with a natural fibre finish.
Helpful hint: The yarn thickness affects the finished size and firmness of the clutch. Always crochet a small sample if substituting yarn.

Finished Size

The finished clutch size will depend on your tension and yarn choice. The crochet circles are designed to fit 250mm craft rings.

Crochet Abbreviations

  • ch: chain
  • dc: double crochet
  • tr: treble crochet
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • mr: magic ring
  • inc: increase
Pattern note: The crochet circles are worked in rounds. A magic ring is used to begin, however you can also create a small loop using chains and work into the centre.

Construction Overview

The Crochet Clutch is created in five main stages:

  1. Crochet two circular panels.
  2. Attach each crochet circle to a craft ring.
  3. Create the crochet chain strap.
  4. Add the felt lining.
  5. Join the base and finish the clutch.

Make the Crochet Circles

Make two identical crochet circles using a 7mm crochet hook.

  1. Create a magic ring.
  2. Work 8 double crochet stitches into the ring and join with a slip stitch.
  3. Continue increasing evenly each round to create a flat circular shape.
  4. Follow the increase pattern until the circle reaches the required size.
  5. Complete the final rounds and fasten off.
  6. Sew in all loose ends neatly.
Crochet tip: Keep your increases evenly spaced so the circle remains flat rather than curling into a bowl shape.

Attach Crochet Circles to Rings

  1. Place one crochet circle around one craft ring.
  2. Using a whip stitch, sew the edge of the crochet circle securely onto the ring.
  3. Repeat with the second crochet circle and remaining ring.

Create the Strap

  1. Crochet a chain approximately 50cm long.
  2. Attach each end of the chain to a ring approximately 10cm down from the handle openings.
  3. Secure the ends firmly.

Add the Felt Lining

  1. Cut a felt rectangle measuring approximately 45cm x 14cm.
  2. Starting at the beginning of the joined chain, stitch the edge of the felt around the inside of the ring.
  3. Repeat on the opposite ring using the other edge of the felt rectangle.
Helpful hint: Position the felt lining inside the bag before permanently stitching to ensure it sits smoothly without pulling on the crochet panels.

Create the Clutch Hinge

  1. Fold the felt inside the bag.
  2. Use pegs to hold the bottom edges together.
  3. Using Spaghetti Yarn, sew approximately 15cm of the bottom rings together.
  4. This stitched section acts as a hinge for opening and closing the clutch.

Finishing

  1. Check all seams are secure.
  2. Sew in all remaining yarn ends.
  3. Adjust the felt lining if required.

Customisation Ideas

  • Use contrasting crochet colours for a statement look.
  • Add embroidery or decorative stitching to the crochet panels.
  • Create a shorter handle for a handbag-style clutch.
  • Add a button, magnetic clasp or snap closure.
  • Experiment with different felt lining colours.

Care

Follow the care instructions for your chosen yarn. Spot cleaning is recommended to help maintain the structure of the clutch and protect the felt lining.

Store the clutch flat when not in use to help maintain its shape.
