How to Crochet the Christmas Ornaments
Crochet simple triangular Christmas ornaments that can be finished as either a tree or Santa hat. The motifs are worked from a magic ring, stiffened with a Mod Podge mixture and finished with a hanging loop and pom pom.
This is a quick decorative crochet project using Lincraft Cotton 8ply and a 4.00mm crochet hook.

Tension
Tension is not important for this project.
Special Abbreviation
mr = magic ring (alternatively 6ch, sl st into beg ch and tr into ring).
Tree/ Santa Hat
Using MC and 4.00mm hook, make a mr.
1st round: 6ch (counts as tr and 3ch throughout), [3tr in ring, 3ch] twice, 2tr in ring. Sl st in top of 3rd ch to join.
2nd round: Sl st to middle of 3ch sp, 6ch, 3tr in same sp, [1ch, (3tr, 3ch, 3tr) in next sp] twice, 1ch, 2tr in beg sp. Sl st in top of 3rd ch to join.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
FINISHING:
Mix 1 part Mod Podge with 1 part water. Soak triangle in mod podge mix, ring out and dry flat on non-stick silicone sheet.
In MC 15ch and join ends to the top point of the triangle to create a loop to hang ornament from.
Using CC create a small pom pom and secure to the top point of the triangle.
Alternative Yarns
The original pattern uses Lincraft Cotton 8ply. When choosing an alternative yarn, select an 8ply cotton or cotton-blend yarn that works comfortably with a 4.00mm crochet hook and can be stiffened successfully after crocheting.
Suitable Yarn Types
- 8ply cotton yarn – the closest substitute for the original and suitable for stiffening.
- Mercerised cotton – provides a smoother finish and crisp stitch definition.
- Cotton-acrylic blend – may work well, though test how it responds to the stiffening mixture first.
- Recycled cotton blend – suitable provided it creates a firm motif and accepts the finishing treatment.
Customisation Ideas
- Use red with a white pom pom for a Santa hat ornament.
- Use green with a yellow or gold pom pom for a Christmas tree ornament.
- Add metallic thread alongside the main yarn for subtle sparkle.
- Use contrasting hanging loops to coordinate with the pom pom.
- Make a set in different colours for a colourful Christmas display.
- Add small beads or sequins after the ornament has completely dried.
To retain the original triangular construction, keep the two crochet rounds unchanged when making colour or decorative customisations.
Care Instructions
These ornaments are stiffened with a Mod Podge and water mixture and should be treated as decorative items rather than washable crochet pieces.
- Keep the finished ornaments dry.
- Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth or brush.
- Avoid soaking or washing, as moisture may soften the stiffened crochet.
- Store flat or in a rigid container to help prevent bending.
- Keep away from direct heat or open flames.
