How to Crochet Festive Granny Coasters

Add a handmade touch to your table with these colourful crochet coasters. The pattern includes two round designs: a textured Granny Circle and a bold Granny Wheel.

Both options are worked from the centre out in joined rounds using three colours of 8 ply cotton. Make a matching set or mix the two designs for a varied collection.

Finished Measurement

Each completed coaster measures approximately 9 cm in diameter.

What You Will Need

Yarn

The original pattern uses Lincraft Cotton 8 Ply in three colours:

• Colour 1: 1 × 50 g ball
• Colour 2: 1 × 50 g ball
• Colour 3: 1 × 50 g ball

This quantity is enough to make several coasters, depending on individual tension and colour placement.

Hook and Equipment

• 4 mm crochet hook
• Wool needle for weaving in ends
• Scissors
• Blocking mat and pins, if available

Tension

Exact tension is not important for this project. However, use the same hook, yarn and tension throughout when making a matching set.

Aim for a firm, flat fabric that will support cups and glasses without curling excessively.

Special Stitch: Puff Stitch

To work a puff stitch:

1. Yarn over and insert the hook into the ring or space.
2. Yarn over and pull up a loop.
3. Repeat this sequence once more.
4. Yarn over and pull through all five loops on the hook.

Construction Overview

Choose between two coaster designs:

• Option 1: Granny Circle – a four-round design with a textured puff-stitch centre.
• Option 2: Granny Wheel – a three-round design with six evenly spaced spokes.

The source project photograph on page 1 shows the designs worked in festive red, white and grey combinations.

Option 1: Granny Circle

Make four coasters, or the desired number for your set.

Round 1: Puff-Stitch Centre

1. Using Colour 1 and the 4 mm hook, make a magic ring.
2. Chain 3 and work one half treble into the ring. Together, these count as the first puff stitch.
3. Chain 1.
4. Work one puff stitch followed by chain 1 into the ring seven times.
5. Join to the top of the beginning chain 3 with a slip stitch.
6. Fasten off.

You should have eight puff-stitch sections.

Round 2

1. Attach Colour 2 in any chain-1 space.
2. Chain 3.
3. Work one treble into the next chain space.
4. Chain 2.
5. Work 2 trebles followed by chain 2 into each of the next seven chain spaces.
6. Join to the top of the beginning chain 3 with a slip stitch.
7. Fasten off.

Round 3

1. Attach Colour 1 in any chain-2 space.
2. Chain 3.
3. In the same chain space, work one treble, chain 1, two trebles and chain 1.
4. In each of the next seven chain-2 spaces, work two groups of two trebles followed by chain 1.
5. Join to the top of the beginning chain 3 with a slip stitch.
6. Fasten off.

Round 4

1. Attach Colour 3 in any chain-1 space.
2. Chain 3.
3. Work 2 trebles into the same chain space.
4. Chain 1.
5. Work 3 trebles followed by chain 1 into each of the remaining 15 chain spaces.
6. Join to the top of the beginning chain 3 with a slip stitch.
7. Fasten off.

Option 2: Granny Wheel

Make four coasters, or the desired number for your set.

Round 1: Create the Spokes

1. Using Colour 1 and the 4 mm hook, make a magic ring.
2. Chain 6. This counts as one treble crochet and one chain-3 space.
3. Work one treble followed by chain 3 into the ring five times.
4. Join to the top of the beginning chain 3 with a slip stitch.
5. Fasten off.

You should have six treble spokes separated by chain-3 spaces.

Round 2

1. Attach Colour 2 in any chain-3 space.
2. Chain 3.
3. Work 3 trebles into the same chain space.
4. Chain 2.
5. Work 4 trebles followed by chain 2 into each of the next five chain-3 spaces.
6. Join to the top of the beginning chain 3 with a slip stitch.
7. Fasten off.

Round 3

1. Attach Colour 3 in any chain-2 space.
2. Chain 3.
3. In the same space, work 3 trebles, chain 2 and 4 trebles.
4. In each of the next five chain-2 spaces, work 4 trebles, chain 2 and 4 trebles.
5. Join to the top of the beginning chain 3 with a slip stitch.
6. Fasten off.

Finishing

1. Weave in all loose yarn ends securely.
2. Gently stretch each coaster into a smooth circle.
3. Wet block or lightly steam according to the yarn-care instructions.
4. Pin the outer edge evenly and allow the coaster to dry completely.

Alternative Yarns for This Project

A suitable substitute should be a smooth DK or 8 ply yarn that creates a firm, absorbent fabric with a 4 mm hook.

• 8 ply cotton – the best general choice for absorbency, heat resistance and stitch definition.
• 8 ply mercerised cotton – creates crisp stitches with a slight sheen.
• 8 ply recycled cotton – provides a sturdy, contemporary-looking finish.
• 8 ply cotton and linen blend – creates a firm, absorbent coaster with a natural texture.
• 8 ply cotton and acrylic blend – produces a softer, lighter coaster, although it may be less heat resistant than pure cotton.

Choosing the Best Substitute

Pure cotton is generally the most suitable fibre for coasters because it is absorbent, washable and relatively heat resistant.

Avoid heavily fluffy or loosely spun yarns, as they may shed fibres, obscure the stitch pattern or produce an uneven surface beneath cups.

Care
