Project: Christmas Napkin Holders

Pattern: 2570

Craft type: Knitting

Difficulty: ●○○

YOU WILL NEED

  • 1 x ball of red cosy wool (scraps are fine for this project)
  • 1 x ball of white cosy wool (scraps are fine for this project)
  • 1 x large jingle bell for each napkin holder you are making.
  • 4mm knitting needles

INSTRUCTIONS

Suitable for complete beginners, this project uses not much yarn, and is worked in stocking stitch throughout. An ideal project for children.

Cast on 20 stitches in red yarn.

Work 5 rows in stocking stitch.
Change to white yarn and work 2 rows of stocking stitch.
Work a further 2 rows red, 2 rows white, 2 rows red, 2 rows white and finish with 5 rows of red.
The finished piece will be red with 3 white stripes.

Cast off, and sew together, and sew on a jingle bell.

Alternative Yarns

When substituting the red and white cosy wool, choose a yarn that works comfortably with 4mm knitting needles and produces a fabric suitable for forming the napkin holder.

Small amounts of leftover yarn are suitable for this project, making it a useful way to use coordinating scraps from other knitting projects.

Important: A different yarn weight may change the finished size and thickness of the napkin holder. Check that the knitted piece is large enough to fit comfortably around the intended napkin before sewing it together.

Customisation Ideas

  • Use traditional red, green and white yarn for a classic Christmas colour scheme.
  • Replace the white stripes with gold, silver or another contrasting colour.
  • Use different coloured jingle bells to coordinate with your table setting.
  • Make a matching set in different colour combinations for each place setting.
  • Add a small decorative button or festive embellishment instead of a jingle bell.

Care Instructions

Follow the care instructions provided on the yarn label used for the project. Spot clean where possible, particularly if decorative jingle bells or other embellishments have been attached.

If washing is required, take care to protect the jingle bell and allow the napkin holder to dry thoroughly before storing. Store flat in a dry place between uses to help maintain its shape.
