Alternative Yarns
The original pattern uses Makr Cotton 8ply. When choosing an alternative yarn, select an 8ply or equivalent yarn that can produce granny squares measuring 6cm x 6cm using a 4.00mm crochet hook.
Suitable Yarn Types
- 8ply cotton yarn – provides structure, stitch definition and a cool finish suitable for summer wear.
- 8ply cotton-acrylic blend – offers similar structure with slightly easier care and softness.
- 8ply bamboo-cotton blend – may create a softer drape while retaining a breathable feel.
- 8ply recycled cotton blend – can work well provided the required motif size and fabric stability are achieved.
- 8ply acrylic yarn – an easy-care option, though the finished drape may differ from cotton.
Customisation Ideas
- Change the motif colour sequence to create a more random or tonal arrangement.
- Use one colour for all motif centres for a simpler, more coordinated look.
- Create a monochrome version using different shades from the same colour family.
- Choose a front or back opening as allowed in the original pattern.
- Make the longer version by adding the additional row of motifs specified in the pattern.
- Add extra rows of treble as noted in the original pattern to adjust bust and waist sizing.
- Use contrasting buttons to highlight the closure.
Keep the original motif counts, layout sequence and strap measurements unchanged if you wish to retain the intended proportions for each size.
Care Instructions
Follow the washing and care instructions provided on the ball band of the yarn used.
- Sew in all ends securely before washing.
- Fasten buttons before washing to reduce strain on the button band.
- Wash using the method and temperature recommended for the selected yarn.
- Avoid excessive heat that may shrink or distort cotton fibres.
- Gently reshape the garment after washing, paying particular attention to the granny square joins.
- Lay flat to dry where appropriate to help maintain the bust and length measurements.
- Store folded rather than hanging to help prevent the straps and crochet fabric from stretching.
