P310 Boho Christmas Placemat & Coaster Set

Our Boho Christmas Placemats and Coasters are sure to make a statement at Christmas lunch! Perfect for a boho themed Christmas table setting, this pattern is great for beginners and is made using our 100% 8ply cotton.

How to Crochet the Boho Christmas Placemat & Coaster Set

Crochet a coordinated placemat and coaster set with a relaxed boho finish. Both pieces are worked in a spiral using two yarns held together, then finished with a brushed fringe around the outer edge.

The pattern is written in UK terms and uses simple double crochet increases to build each circular piece from the centre out.

FRINGE

Using ‘Natural’ yarn and ‘Harvest Gold’ yarn.

Cut strands of yarn double the length of your desired fringe length. For example if you’d like your fringe to be 5cm long you will cut 10cm lengths of yarn.

To attach fringe, hold 2 strands of yarn together (one of each colour) ensuring they are even. Fold them in half, insert your crochet hook through the stitch you would like to attach your fringe to, place the loop created by folding your yarn in half onto your hook and pull through. You can then use your fingers to pull the loose ends of yarn back through the loop to secure.

Repeat this process all the way around for both coaster and placemat.

FINISHING

Take hairbrush or carding comb and brush out fringe to create ‘feathered’ look.

You may like to block your placemats and coasters if you find they’re not laying flat.

Sew in any remaining ends.

Alternative Yarns

The original pattern uses Makr 8 Ply Cotton ‘Natural’ held together with Sullivans 3 Ply Royal Rayon Yarn ‘Harvest Gold’. When substituting yarns, choose two strands that can be held together comfortably on a 5mm crochet hook and create a firm but flexible fabric.

Suitable Yarn Types

  • 8ply cotton yarn – provides structure and durability for tableware.
  • Cotton-linen blend – creates a natural, textured boho finish.
  • Cotton-rayon blend – can add a slight sheen similar to the original contrast yarn.
  • Mercerised cotton – provides crisp stitch definition and a polished finish.
  • Two contrasting cotton yarns held together – can create a marled effect while retaining a practical fibre choice.
Important: Although tension isn’t important for this project, using different yarn weights may change the finished 10cm coaster and 21cm placemat measurements, as well as the amount of yarn required.

Customisation Ideas

  • Use neutral tones for a minimalist table setting.
  • Choose metallic or subtle shimmer yarn as the second strand for a festive finish.
  • Change the fringe length by cutting the strands to twice your preferred finished fringe length.
  • Use contrasting fringe colours while keeping the crocheted centre neutral.
  • Make a coordinated set with multiple placemats and coasters in matching colours.
  • Omit the brushed finish and leave the fringe twisted for a more defined texture.

To retain the original proportions, keep all round counts and stitch increases unchanged when making colour or fringe customisations.

Care Instructions

Follow the washing and care instructions provided on the ball bands of both yarns used.

  1. Sew in all ends securely before washing.
  2. Use a gentle wash suitable for both yarn fibres.
  3. Avoid excessive heat that may shrink cotton or damage rayon fibres.
  4. Reshape the placemat and coaster while damp.
  5. Lay flat to dry where appropriate.
  6. Brush the fringe gently after drying if the feathered finish becomes flattened.
  7. Block again if needed to help the pieces lie flat.
