EASY KNIT

MAKR ORGANIC COTTON

This is easy knitting and a fun Christmas Craft project. The angel parts are made using a simple wrap and turn knitting technique in a basic knit stitch. It is knitted in three parts; the head, wings and body, which are all made in different colours. Chenille sticks provide some structure to the centre of the angel, and also become's it's halo. Try mixing and matching contrast colours between all the parts so you can create a variety of angels as we have shown.

Notes

Wrap & Turn Technique:
Bring the yarn forward, slip the next stitch purlwise, take the yarn back again, replace the slipped stitch on the left hand needle, bring the yarn forward again and turn the work.

NOTE: This pattern is written in British English. All measurements in charts and instructions are in cm. For conversion from centimetres to inches please divide by 2.5cm. Please be aware that there are different terms for crocheting and knitting in American and British English, if in doubt, we've included a list of common abbreviations.
Suitable yarn substitutes: This pattern uses an 8-ply/DK weight cotton yarn on 4mm needles (tension 20st x 40 rows garter st = 10cm x10cm). Suitable replacements include:
  • Makr Cotton 8ply (100g) — an 8-ply cotton yarn suited to medium-weight projects, tension 22 sts x 28 rows to 10cm on 4mm needles. Very close match, same brand.
  • Heirloom 8ply Cotton (50g) — 100% pure cotton in 8-ply/DK weight, soft and smooth. Note this comes in 50g balls, so you'd need double the quantity compared to the pattern's 100g balls.
  • Patons Cotton Blend 8ply (50g) — a cotton-acrylic blend, light, bright and strong, tension 26 sts x 35 rows to 10cm on 4mm needles. Slightly finer gauge, but the acrylic content adds extra body which can help the wings hold their fanned shape.
Choose a plain, non-fuzzy cotton or cotton-blend with some body/crispness so the wrap & turn shaping holds its dimension — avoid mohair, boucle, or highly textured yarns as they will obscure the garter-stitch detail on these small pieces.

Angel

Head

Measures 6cm diameter.

With Col 1, cast on 5 sts.

  1. K4, w&t, k4.
  2. K2, w&t, k2.
  3. Repeat rows 1 and 2, 14 times.

Cast off.

Join to make circle by sewing end seams together. Draw to tighten end thread in middle to close hole.

Wings

Measurement: 12cm across.

With Col 2, cast on 11 sts.

  1. K10, w&t, k10.
  2. K8, w&t, k8.
  3. K6, w&t, k6.
  4. K4, w&t, k4.
  5. K2, w&t, k2.
  6. K4, w&t, k4.
  7. K6, w&t, k6.
  8. K8, w&t, k8.

Repeat Rows 1 to 8, 5 times.

Cast off.

Body

Measurement: 14cm diameter

Cast on 13 sts.

  1. K12, w&t, k12.
  2. K10, w&t, k10.
  3. K8, w&t, k8.
  4. K6, w&t, k6.
  5. K4, w&t, k4.
  6. K2, w&t, k2.
  7. K4, w&t, k4.
  8. K6, w&t, k6.
  9. K8, w&t, k8.
  10. K10, w&t, k10.

Repeat Rows 1 to 10, 7 times.

Cast off.

Join end seams to make circle.

To Finish

Shape the Chenille stick into a halo at the top, leaving about 12-13cm for the spine. Leave enough remnant to wrap at the base of the halo circle so the halo shape stays.

Sew the bottom portion of the Chenille stick (halo spine) onto the centre of the wings.

Fold the body in half and place on top of the wings.

Place the head on top of the body.

Sew the head and the body onto the wings with about 4 slip stitches; about 1cm either side of the centre of the chenille spine.

Fold the head up towards the spine. Turn the angel around, and sew the spine onto the back of the head. Leave a thread to create a hanging loop.
