Alternative Yarns

The original pattern specifies Makr ORGANIC COTTON Yarn and also states that the pattern can be made in Lincraft BABY 8PLY MERINO Yarn or Makr BABY SOFT Yarn. When using another substitute, choose a yarn that can achieve the required tension for the selected fibre and needle combination.

Suitable Yarn Types

  • 8ply organic cotton – closely matches the original cotton option and provides clear stitch definition.
  • 8ply baby merino – provides warmth, softness and natural elasticity.
  • Soft 8ply baby yarn – suitable for a gentle fabric intended for baby garments.
  • 8ply cotton-acrylic blend – combines softness, structure and easier care.
  • Machine-washable 8ply wool – suitable where warmth and easier washing are preferred.
Important: The source lists different tensions for Organic Cotton and for Baby Merino/Baby Soft. Match the relevant tension before beginning so the finished toe-to-heel measurement remains approximately 8cm, 10cm or 13cm for the selected size.

Customisation Ideas

  • Choose a different colour for each pair while retaining the original stitch counts and size brackets.
  • Use soft neutral shades for a classic baby gift.
  • Use pastel colours for a traditional nursery palette.
  • Make coordinating pairs using the three available sizes.
  • Add simple embroidery after finishing, taking care not to affect the stretch or fit.

To retain the original sizing, keep all cast-on counts, size brackets, row counts, picked-up stitch counts and heel-and-toe shaping unchanged.

Care Instructions

Follow the washing and care instructions provided on the ball band of the yarn used.

  1. Sew in all ends securely before washing.
  2. Wash using the method and temperature recommended for the selected yarn.
  3. Use gentle washing suitable for baby garments.
  4. Avoid excessive agitation when using wool or fibres prone to felting.
  5. Gently reshape the socks while damp.
  6. Lay flat to dry where appropriate.
