This cute book bag with Owl Eyes is made as separate front and back pieces. The eyes and nose are knitted separately and sewn on. The bag strap is made separately and attached to the inside of the bag. Overall this is an easy knitting project which can be tackled by a beginner who is ready to embark on patterned knitting and simple shaping. The stripes on the bag are made in a simple wave stitch in an easy repeating pattern, and the rest of the knitting is in plain garter stitch. A wrap-and-turn technique is applied to make the round shapes for eyes, and easy decrease shaping is applied to make the nose as a triangle shape. There are two suggested colourways you can follow.

  • 5mm knitting needles
  • 4mm knitting needles for eyes, nose and strap.
  • Wool needle for sewing in ends

4mm: 22 sts and 28 rows = 10cm x 10cm.

Garter Stitch

Knit all rows.

Wrap & Turn (W&T) Technique

Yf, spw, yb, sl st back onto the left hand needle, yf, turn.

Yarn forward, slip stitch purlwise, take yarn to the back of the knitting, slip stitch back onto the left hand needle, bring yarn to the front of knitting, turn.

NOTE: This pattern is written in British English. All measurements in charts and instructions are in cm. For conversion from centimetres to inches please divide by 2.5cm. Please be aware that there are different terms for crocheting and knitting in American and British English, if in doubt, we've included a list of common abbreviations.
Please use only the yarn specified. Another yarn is likely to yield different results. Quantities are approximate as knitting styles may vary between knitters. Check the ball bands to ensure all yarn is from the same dye lot.

Book Bag Pattern

Make x 2 (Back & Front)

Using 5mm needles and Col 1, cast on 57 sts.

Stripe Wavy Pattern:

  • Row 1. K
  • Row 2. P
  • Row 3. k1, *(p 2tog) twice, (k into b/f of st) repeat 3 times, p into front of st, in the same st p front again together with next st, p2tog*. Repeat * to * to last st, k.
  • Row 4. P
  • Row 5: Change to Col 2 and repeat from row 1 to 4, alternating colours changes every 4 rows until knitting measure approx. 20cm.

Head

Change to Col 3 and work garter stitch for 32 rows.

Border

Change to Col 2 and work the following pattern:

  • Row 1. K
  • Row 2. P
  • Row 3. k1, *(p 2tog) twice, (k into b/f of st) repeat 3 times, p into front of st, in the same st p front again together with next st, p2tog*. Repeat * to * to last st, k.
  • Row 4. P

Cast off.

Eyes (Make 2)

Inner Eyes

With 4mm needles and Col 4 cast on 5 sts.

  1. K4, w&t, k4
  2. K2, w&t, k2

Repeat 13 times

Cast off.

Outer Eyes

With 4mm needles and Col 5 cast on 11 sts.

  1. K10, w&t, k10
  2. K8, w&t, k8
  3. K6, w&t, k6
  4. K4, w&t, k4
  5. K2, w&t, k2
  6. K4, w&t, k4
  7. K6, w&t, k6
  8. K8, w&t, k8

Repeat 5 times.

Cast off.

Join ends to make circles. Pull and secure middle thread to tighten hole in centre of circle.

Nose (Make 1)

With 4mm needles and Col 6 Cast on 15 sts.

  1. *K row
  2. K1, k2tog, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1.*
  3. Repeat * to * until 5 sts:

  5. K1, k3tog, k1.
  6. K row
  7. K3tog

Strap (Make 1)

With 4mm needles and Col 6 Cast on 8 sts.

Work Garter Stitch pattern for 64cm.

Cast off.

Finishing

Pin front and back pieces with wrong sides facing and sew seams together using back stitch.

Sew INNER EYES onto OUTER EYES using slip stitch or crochet stitch seams.

Sew NOSE in the centre of the head portion (the garter stitch portion) of the front using slip stitch or crochet stitch seams.

Sew EYES on either side of the nose using slip stitch or crochet stitch seams.

Sew the STRAPS 5cm on the inside of the bag seams. Sew the strap onto the edge of the bag border to secure using slip stitch or crochet stitch seams.
