This Willow Dress has a lace frill along the straps and neckline. The skirt is knitted in stocking stitch and has a lot of width. The length can be customised. First the frill is knitted, then the yoke and armholes, and then the frill and yoke are knitted together. The skirt is knitted in the round.

  • Row 2 and alt rows: P.
  • Row 9: K1, *sl1, k1, psso, k2 (m1, k2tog) twice, m1, k3, m1 (sl1, k1, psso, m1) twice, k2, k2tog*, k1.

Put FRILL piece aside.

Yoke

The yoke is knitted back and forth in garter stitch.

Cast on 96 (108, 124) sts using provisional cast on using 3.5mm needles.

Knit 1 row, AT THE SAME TIME place 2 markers to indicate the shoulders, as follows:

Knit 30 (33,37), pm = one of the straps from mid shoulder to the back;

Knit 36 (42, 50), pm = front piece from mid shoulder to mid shoulder;

Knit 30.

Knit 2 rows AT THE SAME TIME cast off 1 st at the beginning of every row = 94 (106, 122) sts.

On next row inc 5(5,6) sts evenly on the neck piece between the two markers by picking up the loop between two sts and kitting it tbl – 99 (109,126) sts.

Knit 2 rows, cast off 1 st at the beginning of every row = 97 (109, 126) sts.

Knit 2 rows.

Knit 2 rows, cast off 1 st at the beginning of every row = 95 (107 124) sts.

Knit 1 row.

On next row once again inc on the neck piece.

Inc 10(10,12) sts evenly on the neck piece between the two markers = 105 (117, 136) sts.

*knit 2 rows, cast off 1 st at the beginning of every row, knit 2 rows *.

Repeat from * to * 1 time;

= 101 (113, 132) sts which are placed as follows:

25 (28, 32) sts until the first marker = one of the straps from mid shoulder to back;

51 (57, 68) sts until the second marker = front piece from mid shoulder to mid shoulder;

25(28, 32) sts throughout the rest of the row = the other strap from mid shoulder to back.

Cast Off Sts for Straps and at the Same Time Inc for Front Piece

Cast off the 25 (28,32) sts until the first marker.

Cast off 11 (12, 14) front piece sts, 1 st remains on right hand needle.

Knit 2 sts in 1 st (front and back loop ) 27 (32,38) times, knit 1.

Cast off the remaining 11 (12, 14) sts on the front piece.

Cast off the remaining 25 (28, 32) sts on the needle

Break yarn

= 56 (66,78) front piece sts.

Now continue knitting the front piece back and forth in st st, knit two edge sts in each side and inc 1 st in each side within the 2 edge sts on all the right side rows.

First row is a purl row from the wrong side of the piece.

Join yarn on the wrong side of the piece

Purl until 1 sts remains, k 1.

Work all right side rows as follows:

Slip, knit 1, m1 (pick up loop between two sts and knit this st tbl), knit until 2 sts remain, m1, k2.

Work all wrong side rows as follows:

Slip, purl until 1 st remains, knit 1.

Repeat these two rows for a total of 8(10,12) times = 72, (86, 102) sts.

Put FRONT piece sts aside.

Knit the Frill Together with the Straps and the Neckline

The frill is knitted together with the dress from the wrong side of the piece.

Pick up sts from the "provisional cast" on 3mm needles.

Place the frill with the wrong side up

Place the dress on top of the frill, also wrong side up.

Now knit the frill and the dress together in k sts from the wrong side of the piece as follows:

Using 3.5mm needles, knit 1 st from the frill and 1 st from the dress together.

Continue as described throughout the row.

Cast off all sts in k from the right side.

Now join the front piece and the straps and continue knitting in the round in st st.

On next round cast on sts for back piece as follows:

Knit the 72 (86, 102) front piece sts, pm.

Cast on 10 (15, 17) new sts.

Now pick up and kit 11 sts at the end of the garter ridge strap.

Pick up and kit 1 st along the edge of the frill.

Now continue to the other strap.

Pick up and knit 1 st along the edge of the frill, then pick up and knit 11 sts at the end of the garter ridge strap.

Cast on 10 (15,17) new sts, pm = beginning of round

Work the next round as follows

Knit 72 (86, 102, 122) front piece sts until you reach the first marker

*knit 1, m1, knit 2, m1*repeat from * to * to end of round

Knit 1 round.

Next round is a knit round but at the same time inc evenly until you have 75 (90,105) front piece sts and 75(90,105) back sts = 150 (180,210) sts.

Knit 4 rounds.

Skirt

Add More Width to the Skirt

on next round place 10 markers as follows:

*knit 15(18,21) pm * repeat from * to * throughout the round

Now inc as follows:

Knit 1, m1, knit until 1 st remains before the next marker, m1, knit 1*

Repeat from * to throughout the round.

Inc as described on every 12th,(14th, 16th) round until skirt measures (from the arm hole 25(29,30)cm

Skirt Lace Border

NB: make sure stitch count is a multiple of 19sts for the Lace Repeat. If you need to add more sts, do this in some extra rows.

For knitting this Lace repeat in the Round, alternating rows will be Knit, instead of Purl.

Sl1 K1 psso from Round 15 happens over last stitch of round 14, and 1st from round 15.
