A combination of nine easy to learn stitches, this blanket is a great knitalong-project, with each stripe introduces the knitter to a new stitch. A fun addition to any lounge or bedroom, this pattern has texture in spades. Techniques you should already know prior to commencing this project are knit, purl, slipping stitches and casting off.

Please use only the yarn specified. Another yarn is likely to yield different results. Quantities are approximate as knitting styles may vary between knitters. Check the ball bands to ensure all yarn is from the same dye lot.

NOTE: A circular knitting needle is used here instead of a standard pair of needles to manage the large number of stitches. Work back and forth in rows, do not join to work in the round.

NEEDLES AND EQUIPMENT:

A 7.00mm circular knitting needle, 100cm or longer.
Wool needle for sewing in ends.

TENSION (EDGING):

13.5 sts and 19 rows to 10cm over seed st, using 7.00mm needles.

BLANKET

Seed Stitch Edge:

A lovely, textured stitch, the seed stitch is a play on the classic 1x1 rib stitches. Alternating knits and purls to create a pebbled fabric.

Using 7.00mm circular needles and C1 (contrast colour), cast on 190 sts.

We recommend using the long tail cast on method or the knit-on cast on method.

Row 1: *K1, P1 repeat from * to end
Row 2: *P1, K1 repeat from * to end

Repeat rows 1 and 2 until stripe measures 13cm from the beginning ending with a WS row.

Double Flecked Stitch Panel:

This grid-like stitch pattern creates simple rows that are punctuated with diagonal seed stitches. Vertical columns divide up the stocking st while the purls create horizontal lines. This blanket pattern uses seed stitch to create a neat border around the stitch sampler stripes.

Using 7.00mm circular needles and changing to colour M, work the following pattern until stripe measures 13cm from seed stitch border, ending with a WS row.

Row 1: (K1,P1) repeat 5 times, knit to last 10 sts, (K1, P1) repeat 5 times.
Row 2: (P1, K1) 5 times, P4 *K2, P4, repeat from * to 14 sts before end, K2, P2, (P1, K1) 5 times.
Row 3: (K1, P1) 5 times, knit until 10 sts before end, (K1, P1) 5 times.
Row 4: (P1, K1) 5 times, P1, K2, P1, * P3, K2, P1, repeat from * to 14 sts before end of row, P3, K1, (P1, K1) 5 times.

Andalusian Stitch Stripe:

A simple stitch pattern to create, it uses a single row of knits and purls to create texture. A vintage knitting stitch, it was named after a community in the south of Spain.

Using 7.00mm circular needles and changing to colour C1, work the following pattern until stripe measures 13cm from previous stripe, ending with a WS row. Here the first and last ten stitches are worked in seed stitch to create a border.

Row 1: (K1,P1) 5 times, knit to last 10 sts, (K1, P1) 5 times.
Row 2: (P1, K1) 5 times, purl to 10 sts before end, (P1, K1) 5 times.
Row 3: (K1, P1) 5 times, *K1, P1, repeat from * to 10 sts before end, (K1, P1) 5 times.
Row 4: (P1, K1) 5 times, purl to 10 sts before end of row, (P1, K1) 5 times.

Hurdle Stitch Stripe:

Named because of the raised vertical bars in the stitch that resembles hurdles, this stitch creates a cosy, reversible stitch.

Using 7.00mm circular needles and changing to colour M, work the following pattern until stripe measures 13cm from previous stripe, ending with a wrong side row.

Row 1: (K1, P1) repeat 5 times, knit to last 10 sts, (K1, P1) repeat 5 times.
Row 2: (P1, K1) 5 times, knit to 10 sts before end, (P1, K1) 5 times.
Row 3: (K1, P1) 5 times, *K1, P1, repeat from * to 10 sts before end, (P1, K1) 5 times.
Row 4: (P1, K1) 5 times, *K1, P1, repeat from * to 10 sts before end, (P1, K1) 5 times.

Chevron Seed Stitch Stripe:

A complicated looking stitch that is surprisingly easy-to-work, the chevron seed stitch has a four row repeat. It uses a combination of knit and purls to create a striking chevron pattern.

Using 7.00mm circular needles and changing to colour C1, work the following pattern until stripe measures 13cm from previous seed stitch stripe, ending with a wrong side row.

Row 1: (K1, P1) repeat 5 times, *P1, K3, P1, K3, repeat from * to last 12 sts, (K1, P1) repeat 6 times.
Row 2: (P1, K1) 6 times, *K1, P5, K1, P1, repeat from * to last 10 sts (P1, K1) 5 times.
Row 3: (K1, P1) 5 times, *K2, P1, K3, P1, K1, repeat from * to 12 sts before end, K2, (K1, P1) 5 times.
Row 4: (P1, K1) 5 times, P2, *P2, K1, P1, K1, P3, repeat from * to 10 sts before end, (P1, K1) 5 times.

Pique Rib Stitch:

This stitch adds a great depth to your fabric but will still allow it to lay completely flat. These qualities, along with an easy to follow stitch pattern makes it perfect for scarves and blankets alike.

Using 7.00mm circular needles and changing to colour M, work the following pattern until stripe measures 13cm from previous stripe, ending with a wrong side row.

Row 1: (K1,P1) repeat 5 times, *K2, P1, repeat from * to last 12 sts, K2, (K1, P1) repeat 5 times.
Row 2: (P1, K1) 5 times, P2 *K1, P2, repeat from * to last 10 sts (P1, K1) 5 times.
Row 3: (K1, P1) 5 times, *K2, P1, repeat from * to 12 sts before end, K2, (K1, P1) 5 times.
Row 4: (P1, K1) 5 times, Knit to 10 sts before end, (P1, K1) 5 times.

Pennant Pleating Stitch:

A stunning, geometric inspired stitch, this pattern cleverly alternates panels of stocking stitch and reverse stocking st to create a ridged, triangular pattern. This stitch would be lovely choice for childrenswear and throws.

Using 7.00mm circular needles and changing to colour C1, work the following pattern until stripe measures 13cm from previous stripe, ending with a wrong side row.

Row 1: (K1,P1) repeat 5 times, *K1, P5, repeat from * to last 12 sts, (K1, P1) repeat 6 times.
Row 2: (P1, K1) 5 times, P2 *K4, P2, repeat from * to last 10 sts (P1, K1) 5 times.

Tile Squares:

Tile squares stitch creates blocks of stocking st divided by seed stitch ribs and a horizontal ridge of purls. A simple 6-row repeat pattern makes up this visually interesting design. Add extra interest to this stitch by working the purl ridge in a contrasting colour.

Using 7.00mm circular needles and changing to colour M, work the following pattern until stripe measures 13cm from previous stripe, ending with a wrong side row.

Tumbling Moss Block Stitch:

An advanced beginner stitch, this reversible stitch creates a fabric that has a three dimensional textured appearance. Using a combination of moss stitch, reverse stocking stitch and stocking stitch panels, it has 20 row repeat but is well worth the effort!

Using 7.00mm circular needles and changing to colour C1, work the following pattern until stripe measures 13cm from previous stripe, ending with a wrong side row.

Cast off in pattern. Weave in all ends.

Alternative Yarns

When substituting Bounty yarn, choose a yarn that can achieve the edging tension of 13.5 sts and 19 rows to 10cm over seed st, using 7.00mm needles.

Suitable alternatives may include smooth or lightly textured yarns with enough stitch definition to show the nine different sampler stitches clearly. Choose two yarns of the same weight and fibre characteristics for M and C1 so the blanket remains consistent in width and drape throughout.

Important: Match the specified tension and finished fabric rather than relying only on yarn weight labels. Work a generous tension swatch before beginning, as a substitute yarn may alter the finished dimensions, stitch definition, drape and total yarn quantity required.

Customisation Ideas

  • Choose two contrasting colours to make each stitch sampler stripe more distinct.
  • Use two tonal shades for a softer, more coordinated look.
  • Work each stitch panel in a different colour while retaining the seed stitch borders.
  • Repeat a favourite stitch panel to create a longer blanket.
  • Use a contrasting colour for the purl ridge in the Tile Squares section for added definition.

Care Instructions

Follow the care instructions provided on the yarn label used for the project. Wash gently using a method suitable for the selected fibre and reshape while damp.

Dry flat where recommended to help maintain the different stitch textures, seed stitch borders and overall dimensions. Store folded rather than hanging, and take care not to snag the raised textured stitches during use or washing.
