How to Make Christmas Present Tags
Add a handmade finishing touch to Christmas gifts with personalised present tags made from decorative paper, ribbon, punched shapes, buttons and pom poms.
Each tag can be decorated differently, making this an ideal project for using leftover paper and embellishments from other Christmas crafts.

What You Will Need
Materials
- Craft tags or decorative tags with string
- Brown linen paper or cardstock for handmade tags
- Blue paper in assorted shades
- Eggshell or pearl-finish paper
- Assorted ribbons
- Silver pen
- Gold pen
- Pom poms, optional
- Buttons, optional
Equipment
- Paper scissors
- Tag-shaped craft punch, optional
- Assorted craft punches such as snowflakes, daisies or gears
- Craft glue
Prepare the Tags
- Use ready-made craft tags or cut tag shapes from cardstock using a tag punch.
- Punch a hole near the top of each handmade tag.
- Thread ribbon, twine or string through each hole.
Create the Decorations
- Use craft punches to cut snowflakes, flowers, stars and other festive shapes from coloured paper.
- Arrange the shapes on each tag before gluing them in place.
- Layer shapes in different colours and sizes to create dimensional decorations.
Decorate the Present Tags
- Draw a reindeer face and add a red pom pom for the nose.
- Attach buttons to represent Christmas baubles.
- Wrap ribbon around a tag and secure it at the back.
- Draw stars, dots, snowflakes or borders using silver and gold pens.
- Attach a blue snowflake to a pale tag and surround it with silver dots.
- Combine several punched shapes to create layered snowflakes or ornaments.
Finish the Tags
Allow the glue to dry completely, then write the recipient’s name and a short message on the reverse of each tag.
Helpful Tips
Create several tags at once by preparing all the bases first, then cutting and sorting the decorative shapes by colour and size.
Use glue sparingly so it does not spread beyond the edges of small paper shapes.
