How to Make Easter Finger Puppets

Create a set of felt Easter finger puppets featuring a rabbit, bilby and chicken. These small handmade characters are ideal for imaginative play, storytelling, Easter baskets or classroom activities.

The puppets can be assembled by hand or with a sewing machine and take approximately one hour to complete.

What You Will Need

Materials

• Felt in assorted colours
• Thread
• Embroidery floss

Equipment

• Sewing machine or sewing needle
• Fabric scissors
• Embroidery needle
• Printed puppet templates
• Pins

Prepare the Felt Pieces

1. Print the template page and cut out each pattern piece.
2. Use the templates to cut the required felt pieces for the rabbit, bilby and chicken.
3. Cut two front and back body pieces for each puppet.
4. Cut the additional ears, faces, bellies and comb pieces according to the quantities marked on the templates.

Make the Bilby Puppet

1. Sew the bilby inner-ear pieces to the outer-ear pieces and set them aside.
2. Sew the bilby face piece to the front body piece.
3. Embroider the eyes, nose and other facial features.
4. Sew the belly piece to the lower half of the front body.
5. Position the ears between the front and back body pieces, with the ear tips pointing inwards and the bases extending beyond the top edge.
6. Pin the body pieces together and sew around the marked seam line, leaving the bottom open for a finger.

Make the Chicken Puppet

1. Embroider the eyes, beak and other features onto the front body piece.
2. Position the chicken comb between the front and back body pieces so it extends from the top.
3. Pin the layers together.
4. Sew around the marked seam line, leaving the bottom open.

Make the Rabbit Puppet

1. Sew each rabbit inner-ear piece to an outer-ear piece and set them aside.
2. Embroider the face onto the front body piece.
3. Sew the belly piece to the lower section of the front body.
4. Position the ears between the front and back body pieces so the ears extend from the top.
5. Pin the layers together and sew around the marked seam line, leaving the bottom open.

Finish the Puppets

Trim loose threads and check that the bottom opening is wide enough to fit comfortably over a finger. Gently reshape the ears and comb before using the puppets for play.
