How to Make Painted Easter Eggs
Turn refillable plastic Easter eggs into playful rabbits and colourful cactus decorations using paint, craft foam and simple embellishments. These quick Easter crafts can be displayed as decorations or opened and filled with small treats.
The project takes approximately 10 minutes to assemble, excluding painting and drying time.

What You Will Need
Materials
- Refillable plastic Easter eggs
- White, black and green paint
- White and pink craft foam sheets
- Wide wooden craft stick
- Hot glue sticks
Equipment
- Paintbrush
- Paint palette
- Fine paintbrush or pen
- Protective craft sheet
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun
Paint the Egg Base
- Open the plastic egg and paint the outside while holding the inside surface.
- Apply a base coat in your chosen colour.
- Set the pieces aside to dry.
- Apply a second coat if needed and allow the paint to dry completely.
Create the Rabbit Eggs
- Cut two large ear shapes and two large oval foot shapes from white craft foam.
- Cut two smaller inner-ear shapes from pink craft foam.
- Cut the wooden craft stick into 2 cm lengths.
- Glue each pink inner ear to the centre of a white outer ear.
- Glue the ears to either side of the pointed top of the egg.
- Overlap the two white oval shapes and glue them beneath the egg to create the feet.
- Glue a short piece of wooden craft stick underneath the feet to create a stable platform.
- Use a fine brush and black paint to add the rabbit’s eyes, nose and mouth.
Create the Cactus Eggs
- Cut a selection of flowers, strips or fringed shapes from pink craft foam.
- Glue the foam decorations to the top of the green-painted egg.
- Use black paint and a fine brush to add small lines, crosses or spikes around the egg.
- Cut the wooden craft stick into 2 cm lengths and glue a piece beneath the egg to help it stand upright.
- Leave out the wooden base when displaying the cactus egg inside a small planter or container.
Allow the Eggs to Dry
Leave all painted and glued elements to dry completely before closing, displaying or filling the eggs.
Helpful Tips
Opening the eggs before painting makes them easier to hold and helps prevent fingerprints on the painted surface.
Hot glue guns can cause burns. Adult supervision is recommended when children are completing this project.
