How to Make a Felt Poppy
Create a simple handmade poppy using red and black felt, a mini pom pom and a safety pin. This easy craft takes approximately 10 minutes to assemble and can be worn on clothing or attached to a bag once the glue has dried.
The folded felt petals give the flower a soft, layered shape, while the fringed black felt and yellow pom pom form the centre.

What You Will Need
Materials
- Red felt
- Stiff black felt
- Yellow mini pom pom
- Safety pin
- Hot glue stick
Equipment
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun
- Printed petal and stamen templates
Cut the Felt Pieces
- Print the template page at Actual Size. Check that the test square measures 3 × 3 cm before cutting the templates.
- Use the petal template to cut four petal shapes from red felt.
- Use the stamen template to cut one strip from stiff black felt.
- Cut a 2 cm circle from stiff black felt. This will form the backing for the poppy.
Create the Felt Petals
- Fold one red felt petal into quarters.
- Apply a small amount of hot glue near the pointed end to hold the folded shape together.
- Repeat with the remaining three red felt petals and allow the glue to dry.
Assemble the Poppy
- Arrange the four folded petals around the 2 cm black felt backing.
- Glue the pointed ends of the petals to the backing, spacing them evenly to create a rounded flower shape.
- Allow the petals to dry securely in place.
Add the Centre
- Glue one end of the black felt stamen strip to the centre of the poppy.
- Wrap the strip into a circle, overlapping it once, and glue it down.
- Glue the yellow mini pom pom into the centre of the black felt stamen.
- Allow the centre to dry completely.
Attach the Safety Pin
- Turn the finished poppy over.
- Glue the safety pin securely to the black felt backing.
- Leave the poppy flat until the glue is fully dry before attaching it to clothing or a bag.
Safety Note
Hot glue guns and melted glue can cause burns. Adult supervision is recommended when children are completing this project.
Check that the safety pin is firmly attached and that all glue is fully dry before wearing the poppy.
