How to Make a Ribbon Poppy

Create a simple handmade poppy using wide red ribbon, black felt and a button. This easy sewing project takes approximately 10 minutes to complete and can be worn as a brooch once the glue has dried.

The gathered ribbon forms soft petals, while the black button creates the traditional dark centre of the poppy.

What You Will Need

Materials

• 30 cm of wide red ribbon
• Thread
• Stiff black felt
• Black button
• Safety pin

Equipment

• Scissors
• Sewing needle
• Fabric glue

Create the Ribbon Petals

1. Cut a 30 cm length of wide red ribbon.
2. Thread the sewing needle and tie a secure knot at the end of the thread.
3. Starting at one short raw edge, sew a running stitch around the ribbon. Continue along one long edge and finish at the opposite short raw edge.
4. Gently pull the thread to gather the ribbon and form the poppy petals.
5. Arrange the gathered ribbon into a rounded flower shape, then stitch the centre together to hold the gathers securely in place.

Add the Poppy Centre

1. Position the black button over the gathered centre of the ribbon.
2. Sew the button firmly in place, covering the visible gathers and stitching.

Create the Brooch Backing

1. Cut a 3 cm circle from the stiff black felt.
2. Stitch the safety pin securely to one side of the felt circle.
3. Apply fabric glue to the other side of the felt and attach it to the back of the ribbon poppy.
4. Press the felt gently into place and allow the glue to dry completely before wearing the poppy.
