How to Make a Hocus Pocus Spell Book

Create a spooky Halloween spell book using a large book-shaped box, layered tissue, painted letters and a jewelled wooden dream catcher. The textured black finish gives the book an aged, magical appearance, while the gold details and gemstones add a dramatic decorative touch.

This easy project takes approximately four hours to complete, including drying time between the painting and gluing stages.

  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Approximate project time: 4 hours

What You Will Need

Materials

  • Large DIY book box
  • Alphabet letter kit
  • 16 cm wooden dream catcher
  • Assorted gemstones
  • Tissues
  • Outback yellow acrylic paint
  • Coal black acrylic paint
  • Mod Podge

Equipment

  • Paint palette
  • Paintbrushes
  • E6000 glue

Create the Textured Book Cover

  1. Tear the tissues into manageable pieces.
  2. Apply a layer of Mod Podge to the outside of the book box.
  3. Press the tissue pieces onto the surface, allowing them to wrinkle and overlap to create an aged, textured finish.
  4. Brush another layer of Mod Podge over the tissue to seal it in place.
  5. Continue until the outside of the book is fully covered.
  6. Leave the book to dry completely.

Paint the Book

  1. Paint the outside of the book with coal black acrylic paint, making sure the paint reaches into the textured areas.
  2. Paint the inside of the book box black as well.
  3. Apply a second coat if needed for an even finish.
  4. Allow the paint to dry completely.

Prepare the Decorations

  1. Select the alphabet letters needed to spell HOCUS POCUS.
  2. Paint the letters with outback yellow acrylic paint.
  3. Paint the wooden dream catcher in the same colour.
  4. Leave all painted pieces to dry completely.

Add the Gemstones

  1. Arrange the coloured gemstones around the wooden dream catcher before gluing.
  2. Place a larger gemstone in the centre and smaller gemstones around the outer sections.
  3. Glue each gemstone securely in place.
  4. Allow the glue to dry before attaching the dream catcher to the book.

Assemble the Spell Book

  1. Position the dream catcher in the centre of the front cover.
  2. Arrange the word HOCUS above it and POCUS below it.
  3. Glue the dream catcher and letters securely to the book.
  4. Add additional letters to the spine if desired.
  5. Leave the book flat until all glue has fully cured.

Safety Note

Use E6000 glue in a well-ventilated area and follow the safety instructions on the packaging. Keep it away from children and avoid contact with skin.

Protect the work surface while using Mod Podge, paint and adhesive, and allow each layer to dry fully before continuing.
