How to Make a Christmas Apron

Sew a festive Christmas apron using just 90 cm of fabric, matching thread and a pair of jingle bells. This easy pattern combines a rectangular skirt, a simple bib, a neck strap and long waist ties for a practical apron with a cheerful seasonal finish.

The original pattern is designed to suit approximately sizes 10–18, but the measurements can be adjusted to create a smaller or larger apron.

What You Will Need

Materials

  • 90 cm of Christmas fabric
  • Matching thread
  • 2 jingle bells
  • 1 button

Equipment

  • Sewing machine
  • Fabric scissors
  • Iron and ironing board
  • Pins

Cut the Fabric Pieces

  1. Lay the fabric flat and cut it horizontally through the centre, parallel to the selvedge.
  2. Reserve one of these large pieces for the skirt section, labelled Piece A.
  3. From the remaining fabric, cut one rectangle measuring approximately 35 cm wide × 66 cm high. This will form the bib, Piece B.
  4. Cut eight horizontal strips from the remaining fabric. These strips will be joined to create the neck strap and waist ties.

Sew the Apron Body

  1. Hem all four edges of the skirt piece.
  2. Fold the bib piece in half with right sides facing.
  3. Sew around the bib, leaving a small opening for turning.
  4. Turn the bib right side out and press it flat.
  5. Topstitch around the edges for a neat finish.
  6. Position the bib centrally over the middle of the skirt, with the shortest edges at the top and bottom.
  7. Sew the bib and skirt together.

Make the Neck Strap

  1. Take one fabric strip and fold it in half lengthwise with wrong sides facing.
  2. Sew a narrow hem at one short end and along the long edge.
  3. Trim the corners, turn the strip right side out and press it flat.
  4. Tuck the remaining raw edge inside and topstitch around the strap.
  5. Attach one end of the strap to the upper right-hand side of the bib.
  6. Leave the opposite end free so it can fasten with the button on the apron.

Make the Waist Ties

  1. Join five of the fabric strips together at their short ends to create one long tie.
  2. Press the joined seams flat.
  3. Fold the long tie in half lengthwise with wrong sides facing.
  4. Sew a narrow hem at one end and along the full length.
  5. Trim the corners, turn the tie right side out and press.
  6. Tuck the remaining raw edge inside and topstitch around all edges.
  7. Find the centre of the long tie and position it across the apron where the bib meets the skirt.
  8. Sew along the upper and lower edges of the tie to secure it to the apron.

Add the Finishing Details

  1. Sew a button to the upper section of the apron so the neck strap can be fastened.
  2. Sew two jingle bells securely to the end of one waist tie.
  3. Press the completed apron before wearing.

Helpful Tips

Check the bib height and waist-tie position against the wearer before sewing them permanently in place.

Attach the jingle bells securely and remove them before washing if the bell material is not machine washable.
