How to Make a Rocket Blast-Off Toy

Create a fun launching rocket using paper cups, rubber bands, glitter foam and cardstock. This easy craft combines creative decorating with a simple launcher mechanism that sends the finished rocket into the air.

Children will enjoy designing their rocket with colourful fins, a glittery nose cone, a window and star decorations before testing the launch.

What You Will Need

Materials

  • 2 paper cups

  • 1 A3 sheet of blue glitter foam
  • Red cardstock
  • Glitter foam star stickers

Equipment

  • Printed rocket template
  • Scissors
  • Glue gun or glue stick

Prepare the Rocket Pieces

  1. Print the template page and cut out the fin, nose and window templates.
  2. Trace the fin template onto red cardstock and cut out the required fin pieces.
  3. Trace the nose template onto red glitter foam and cut it out.
  4. Trace the window template onto blue glitter foam and cut it out.

Create the Launcher

  1. Take one paper cup and make four evenly spaced cuts around the rim.
  2. Cut both rubber bands in half.
  3. Thread one rubber-band piece through two opposite cuts and tie the ends securely.
  4. Thread the second rubber-band piece through the two remaining cuts and tie the ends.
  5. Check that the two rubber bands cross in the centre of the cup to form the launcher mechanism.

Assemble the Rocket

  1. Fold each fin in half to create a firm centre crease.
  2. Glue the fins evenly around the rim of the second paper cup.
  3. Curve the glitter foam nose piece into a cone and glue the straight edges together.
  4. Glue the nose cone securely to the top of the rocket cup.
  5. Glue the blue glitter window to the front of the cup.
  6. Decorate the rocket with glitter star stickers.

Launch the Rocket

  1. Place the decorated rocket cup over the top of the launcher cup.
  2. Gently push the rocket down so the crossed rubber bands stretch beneath it.
  3. Keep the rocket upright, move your hands clear and let go to launch it.

Safety Note

Adult supervision is recommended when using a craft knife or hot glue gun. Cutting with a craft knife should be completed by an adult.

Launch the rocket in a clear indoor or outdoor space, away from faces, fragile objects, pets and other people.
