How to Make a Rocket Blast-Off Toy
Create a fun launching rocket using paper cups, rubber bands, glitter foam and cardstock. This easy craft combines creative decorating with a simple launcher mechanism that sends the finished rocket into the air.
Children will enjoy designing their rocket with colourful fins, a glittery nose cone, a window and star decorations before testing the launch.

What You Will Need
Materials
- 2 paper cups
- 2 Makr rubber bands
- 1 A3 sheet of red glitter foam
- 1 A3 sheet of blue glitter foam
- Red cardstock
- Glitter foam star stickers
Equipment
- Printed rocket template
- Scissors
- Glue gun or glue stick
- Craft knife
Prepare the Rocket Pieces
- Print the template page and cut out the fin, nose and window templates.
- Trace the fin template onto red cardstock and cut out the required fin pieces.
- Trace the nose template onto red glitter foam and cut it out.
- Trace the window template onto blue glitter foam and cut it out.
Create the Launcher
- Take one paper cup and make four evenly spaced cuts around the rim.
- Cut both rubber bands in half.
- Thread one rubber-band piece through two opposite cuts and tie the ends securely.
- Thread the second rubber-band piece through the two remaining cuts and tie the ends.
- Check that the two rubber bands cross in the centre of the cup to form the launcher mechanism.
Assemble the Rocket
- Fold each fin in half to create a firm centre crease.
- Glue the fins evenly around the rim of the second paper cup.
- Curve the glitter foam nose piece into a cone and glue the straight edges together.
- Glue the nose cone securely to the top of the rocket cup.
- Glue the blue glitter window to the front of the cup.
- Decorate the rocket with glitter star stickers.
Launch the Rocket
- Place the decorated rocket cup over the top of the launcher cup.
- Gently push the rocket down so the crossed rubber bands stretch beneath it.
- Keep the rocket upright, move your hands clear and let go to launch it.
Safety Note
Adult supervision is recommended when using a craft knife or hot glue gun. Cutting with a craft knife should be completed by an adult.
Launch the rocket in a clear indoor or outdoor space, away from faces, fragile objects, pets and other people.
