How to Make a Winter Headband

Sew a soft polar fleece headband with a gathered centre detail to keep your ears warm during cooler weather. This easy project uses only three fabric pieces and is suitable for beginner sewists.

The finished headband is comfortable, stretchy and quick to make in your favourite fleece colour.

What You Will Need

Materials

• Polar fleece fabric
• Matching thread

Equipment

• Sewing machine
• Fabric scissors
• Pins

Cut the Fabric Pieces

1. Cut two large rectangles measuring 13 cm × 54 cm.
2. Cut one smaller rectangle measuring 7 cm × 12 cm.

Sew the Main Headband

1. Place the two large rectangles together with right sides facing.
2. Pin the pieces in place.
3. Sew along both long edges to create a long tube.
4. Turn the tube right side out.
5. Arrange the seam neatly, pin the fabric flat and topstitch along the long edges.

Make the Centre Ring

1. Fold the small rectangle in half lengthwise with right sides facing.
2. Pin and sew along the long raw edge.
3. Turn the small tube right side out.
4. Fold the tube in half so the short raw edges meet.
5. Sew the short edges together to create a ring.
6. Turn the ring so the seam and raw edges sit on the inside.

Assemble the Headband

1. Pinch one end of the main headband piece and slide the small ring over it.
2. Move the ring towards the centre of the headband.
3. Fold the main headband in half with the short ends aligned.
4. Pin and sew across the short edge to join the headband into a loop.
5. Slide the small centre ring over the joining seam to conceal it.
6. Adjust the gathers beneath the ring until the headband sits evenly.
