How to Knit the Spaghetti Bag

Knit a simple textured shoulder bag using bulky Spaghetti yarn. The bag is worked flat in garter stitch with integrated handles, then folded and seamed to create the finished shape.

An optional tassel can be added to one of the handle edges for a decorative finish.

Needles

  • A pair of 12.00mm knitting needles.
  • Wool needle for sewing up.

Requirements

Needle and plain thread (optional).

Tension

Tension is not important for this project.

BAG

First Handle:

Using 12.00mm needles, cast on 30 sts.

1st row: K3, cast off next 24 sts, K2 ... 6 sts.

Bag:

Next row: K3, turn, cast on 10 sts, turn, K3 ... 16 sts.

Knit in garter st until Bag measures 90cm from beg.

Second Handle:

Next row: K3, cast off next 10 sts, K2 ... 6 sts.

Next row: K3, turn, cast on 24 sts, turn, K3 ... 30 sts.

Cast off.

FINISHING

Fold Bag in half and sew side seams using whipstitch and a length of Spaghetti yarn. If the yarn is too thick for a yarn needle, just push it through with your fingers. Try to keep the rows even on both sides of the Bag for an almost invisible seam. At the bottom of the Bag, secure the yarn with a knot and poke it through to the wrong side of the Bag.

Tassel (optional):

Cut 7 x 30cm lengths of Spaghetti yarn and fold them in half. Cut a smaller piece of yarn and run it through the fold of the Tassel pieces and knot at the top (or secure with needle and thread). Cut a smaller piece of yarn and wrap it around the Tassel to form a neck. Secure with needle and thread as neatly as possible. Attach the Tassel to one of the Bag handle edges.

Alternative Yarns

The original pattern uses Lincraft Spaghetti yarn. When choosing an alternative yarn, select a very bulky yarn that creates a firm, durable fabric when worked on 12.00mm knitting needles.

Suitable Yarn Types

  • T-shirt yarn – a close substitute that creates a strong and structured bag.
  • Recycled cotton tube yarn – suitable for a durable everyday bag with a contemporary finish.
  • Super-chunky cotton blend – can provide structure while remaining comfortable to carry.
  • Fabric yarn – may create a similar dense texture to the original Spaghetti yarn.
Important: Although tension is not important for this project, a substantially different yarn thickness may change the finished 30cm width, 45cm height and handle size. Check the fabric and dimensions as you work.

Customisation Ideas

  • Use a neutral shade for a versatile everyday tote.
  • Choose a bright colour for a bold statement bag.
  • Add the optional tassel for extra texture and movement.
  • Use a contrasting tassel colour to create a decorative accent.
  • Add a fabric lining after completing the original bag for additional structure and storage security.
  • Add an internal pocket to a fabric lining for small essentials.

To retain the original proportions, keep the cast-on counts, handle shaping and 90cm garter-stitch measurement unchanged when making decorative customisations.

Care Instructions

Follow the washing and care instructions provided on the ball band of the yarn used.

  1. Check the side seams and handles regularly for signs of wear.
  2. Spot clean where practical, particularly when using bulky fabric-style yarn.
  3. Use a gentle wash only if permitted by the yarn manufacturer.
  4. Avoid high heat that may shrink or distort recycled or synthetic fibres.
  5. Reshape the bag while damp.
  6. Lay flat to dry to help maintain the original shape and handle structure.
