NEEDLES:
A pair of 3.25mm knitting needles.
Two double-pointed 3.25mm knitting needles.
Wool needle for sewing up.
REQUIREMENTS:
2 stitch holders.
A pom pom maker (available from Lincraft).
TENSION:
28 sts and 36 rows to 10cm over stocking st, using 3.25mm needles.
BACK FLAP 1
Using a pair of 3.25mm needles, cast on 33 (35-38-39-40)
sts.
Knit 17 (17-17-21-23) rows garter st, first row is wrong
side, and inc one st in centre of last row ... 34 (36-39-40-
41) sts.
Leave sts on a stitch holder.
CENTRE FLAP
Using a pair of 3.25mm needles, cast on 33 (35-39-39-41)
sts.
Knit 17 (17-17-21-23) rows garter st, first row is wrong
side, and inc 2 sts evenly across last row ... 35 (37-41-41-
43) sts.
Leave sts on a stitch holder.
BACK FLAP 2
Using a pair of 3.25mm needles, cast on 33 (35-38-39-40)
sts.
Knit 17 (17-17-21-23) rows garter st, first row is wrong
side, and inc one st in centre of last row ... 34 (36-39-40-
41) sts.
Next row: With right sides facing knit sts from Back Flap
2, knit across sts from Centre Flap stitch holder, then knit
across sts from Back Flap 1 stitch holder ... 103 (109-119-
121-125) sts.
Work in stocking st, beg with a purl row, until work
measures 9 (10-11-13-14) cm from beg of stocking st,
ending with a knit row.
Next row: Purl and dec 2 (8-8-0-4) sts evenly across ...

Shape Crown:
1st row: K1, * K2tog, K8, rep from * to end ... 91 (91-
100-109-109) sts.
2nd and alt rows: Purl.
3rd row: K1, * K2tog, K7, rep from * to end.
5th row: K1, * K2tog, K6, rep from * to end.
7th row: K1, * K2tog, K5, rep from * to end.
9th row: K1, * K2tog, K4, rep from * to end.
11th row: K1, * K2tog, K3, rep from * to end.
13th row: K1, * K2tog, K2, rep from * to end.
15th row: K1, * K2tog, K1, rep from * to end.
17th row: K1, * K2tog, rep from * to end.
18th row: P1 (1-0-1-1), * P2tog, rep from * to end ... 6
(6-6-7-7) sts.
Break off yarn, run end through rem sts, draw up tightly
and fasten off securely.
I-CORD TIE (make 2)
Using two double-pointed 3.25mm needles, cast on 3 sts.
1st row: Knit.
** Do not turn. Slide sts to other end of needle and K3.
Rep from ** until work measures 26 (30-33-36-40) cm (or
length desired).
Cast off.
FINISHING
Join back seam. Sew I-Cord Ties in position, as pictured.
Make a pom pom and attach to crown. Sew in all ends. Turn
up Centre Flap.
Alternative Yarns
When substituting Lincraft Babysoft 4ply, choose a soft 4ply yarn that can achieve the pattern tension of 28 sts and 36 rows to 10cm over stocking st, using 3.25mm needles.
Suitable alternatives may include soft baby acrylic, merino, wool blends or other smooth 4ply yarns suitable for garments worn next to the skin. Choose a yarn with enough elasticity to help the beanie retain its shape.
Customisation Ideas
- Work the beanie in a solid colour for a classic finish.
- Use a contrasting colour for the I-Cord Ties or pom pom.
- Choose a softly variegated or tonal 4ply yarn for subtle colour variation.
