How to Knit a Cobblestone Baby Blanket

Knit a soft rectangular blanket with a subtle cobblestone texture and garter-stitch border. The pattern includes three sizes, making it suitable for a stroller, cot or decorative throw.

The blanket is worked backwards and forwards in rows on a circular needle to comfortably accommodate the large number of stitches.

Finished Measurements

What You Will Need

Materials

• Lincraft Babysoft 8 ply yarn:
  • 3 × 100 g balls for the stroller size
  • 6 × 100 g balls for the crib size
  • 6 × 100 g balls for the throw size

Equipment

• 4.00 mm circular knitting needle
• Wool needle for sewing in ends

Tension

22 stitches and 30 rows to 10 cm over stocking stitch using 4.00 mm needles.

Begin the Blanket

1. Using the 4.00 mm circular needle, cast on 124 (160–193) stitches for the stroller, crib or throw size.
2. Knit 17 rows in garter stitch.
3. Work the following eyelet row: K10 (10–12), *yarn over, knit 2 together, K14 (19–16); repeat from * to the last 9 (10–11) stitches, K9 (10–11).

Work the Cobblestone Pattern

Begin the cobblestone pattern as follows:

1. Work 4 rows in stocking stitch.
2. Row 5: K9, P5, K4; repeat from * to the final 5 stitches, then K5.
3. Row 6: P9, K5, P4; repeat from * to the final 5 stitches, then P5.
4. Repeat Rows 5 and 6 twice.
5. Work 6 rows in stocking stitch.
6. Row 17: P5, K13, P5; repeat from * to the end.
7. Row 18: K5, P13, K5; repeat from * to the end.
8. Repeat Rows 17 and 18 twice.
9. Work 2 rows in stocking stitch.

These 24 rows form the cobblestone pattern.

Continue the Blanket

1. Repeat the 24-row cobblestone pattern until the blanket measures approximately 76 (111–96) cm from the beginning.
2. Finish after the second or fourteenth pattern row, as directed in the original pattern.
3. Work the following eyelet row: K10 (10–12), *K2tog, K14 (19–16); repeat from * to the last 9 (10–11) stitches, K9 (10–11).
4. Knit 17 rows in garter stitch.
5. Cast off.

Add the Side Edging

1. Using the 4.00 mm circular needle, pick up approximately 172 (247–215) stitches, or the number required to suit the blanket length, along one side edge.
2. Knit 17 rows in garter stitch.
3. Cast off.
4. Repeat along the opposite side edge.

Finish the Blanket

1. Sew in all loose yarn ends.
2. Gently block the blanket to the finished measurements so it lies flat.
