MEASUREMENTS

Width (approx, at widest point) cm 25
Length (approx, including straps) cm 25

Yarn Required:

Lincraft Babysoft 8ply 100g balls 1

NEEDLES:

A pair of 4.00mm knitting needles.
Wool needle for sewing in ends.

REQUIREMENTS:

3cm of Velcro.

TENSION:

21 sts and 43 rows to 10cm over garter st, using 4.00mm needles.

BIB

Using 4.00mm needles, cast on 4 sts.
Knit 2 rows garter st.
3rd row: K1, M1, K2, M1, K1 ... 6 sts.
4th row: Knit.
5th row: K1, M1, K4, M1, K1 ... 8 sts.
6th row: Knit.
7th row: K1, M1, K6, M1, K1 ... 10 sts.
8th row: Knit.
9th row: K1, M1, K8, M1, K1 ... 12 sts.
10th row: Knit.
11th row: K1, M1, knit to last st, M1, K1.
Cont inc in this manner in every alt row until there are 38 sts, then every 4th row until there are 52 sts.
Knit 1 row.
Next row: K1, M1, K16, cast off next 18 sts, knit to last st, M1, K1.

Right Strap:

Cont on last 18 sts for Right Strap.
1st row (wrong side): Knit.
2nd row: K1, sl 1, K2tog, psso, knit to last st, M1, K1 ... 17 sts.
Rep 1st and 2nd rows until 7 sts rem.
Knit 21 rows garter st.
Cast off.

Left Strap:

With wrong side facing, join yarn to rem 18 sts.
1st row (wrong side): Knit.
2nd row: K1, M1, knit to last 4 sts, K3tog, K1 ... 17 sts.
Rep 1st and 2nd rows until 7 sts rem.
Knit 21 rows garter st.
Cast off.

FINISHING

Sew Velcro in position at end of Straps. Sew in all ends.

Alternative Yarns

When substituting Lincraft Babysoft 8ply, choose a soft 8ply yarn that can achieve the pattern tension of 21 sts and 43 rows to 10cm over garter st, using 4.00mm needles.

Suitable alternatives may include soft baby acrylic, merino, cotton blends or other smooth yarns that are comfortable against delicate skin and durable enough for frequent washing.

Important: Match the specified tension and finished fabric rather than relying only on yarn weight labels. Work a tension swatch before beginning, as a substitute yarn may alter the finished width, length and strap fit.

Customisation Ideas

  • Work the bib in a solid colour for a simple everyday design.
  • Use a contrasting colour for the two straps.
  • Add simple embroidered details to the front of the bib after knitting.
  • Use a variegated or self-striping baby yarn for subtle colour changes.

Follow the care instructions provided on the yarn label used for the project. Wash gently using a method suitable for the selected fibre and reshape while damp.

Fasten the Velcro before washing to help prevent it catching on the knitted fabric. Dry flat where recommended and check the Velcro regularly to ensure it remains securely sewn to the straps.
