How to Knit the Ladies Spiral Beanie

Knit a fitted spiral-pattern beanie in the round using double-pointed needles. The moving knit-and-purl pattern creates the diagonal spiral effect before the crown is shaped with progressive decreases.

The finished beanie is designed to fit a 56cm head and uses one 100g ball of Lincraft Kimana.

Measurements

Yarn Required

Needles

• A set of 4.50mm double-pointed knitting needles.
• Wool needle for sewing in ends.

Tension

20 sts and 25 rows to 10cm over stocking st, using 4.50mm needles.

BEANIE

Using 4.50mm needles, cast on 97 sts. Join sts in the round, taking care not to twist cast on edge. Place marker at beg of round.

1st round: * K4, P2, rep from * until work measures 20cm (noting that the patt st will move across one st on each round), and inc one st at beg and end of last round … 99 sts.

Shape Crown:

1st round: Keeping patt correct as placed, * patt 2tog, patt 9, rep from * to end … 90 sts.

2nd and alt rounds: Patt to end.

3rd round: * Patt 2tog, patt 8, rep from * to end.

5th round: * Patt 2tog, patt 7, rep from * to end.

7th round: * Patt 2tog, patt 6, rep from * to end.

9th round: * Patt 2tog, patt 5, rep from * to end.

11th round: * Patt 2tog, patt 4, rep from * to end.

13th round: K1, * K2tog, rep from * to end … 23 sts.

15th round: K1, * K2tog, rep from * to end … 12 sts.

16th round: * K2tog, rep from * to end … 6 sts.

Break off yarn, run end through rem sts, draw up tightly and fasten off securely.

FINISHING

Sew in all ends.

Alternative Yarns

The original pattern uses Lincraft Kimana. When choosing an alternative yarn, select a yarn that can achieve the original tension of 20 sts and 25 rows to 10cm over stocking stitch using 4.50mm needles.

• Add a pom pom after completing the original crown shaping.
• Use a contrasting pom pom for a stronger decorative accent.

To retain the original fit and spiral pattern, keep the cast-on count of 97 sts, the 20cm body measurement and all crown decrease rounds unchanged.

Care Instructions

Follow the washing and care instructions provided on the ball band of the yarn used.

1. Sew in all ends securely before washing.
2. Wash using the method and temperature recommended for the selected yarn.
3. Avoid excessive agitation when using wool or fibres prone to felting.
4. Gently reshape the spiral pattern while damp.
