How to Knit the Ladies Coloured Cowl

Knit a long, textured cowl in the round using a repeating six-round slip-stitch pattern. The design creates an elongated loop that can be worn loose or doubled around the neck.

The finished cowl measures approximately 150cm in length and 30cm in depth.

Alternative Yarns

The original pattern uses Lincraft Kimana. When choosing an alternative yarn, select a yarn that can achieve the original tension of 18.5 sts and 35 rows to 10cm over pattern using 4.50mm needles.

Suitable Yarn Types

  • 8ply wool blend – provides warmth, softness and good stitch definition.
  • 8ply acrylic yarn – an easy-care option with a wide range of colours.
  • Machine-washable 8ply wool – suitable for a warm everyday cowl.
  • 8ply wool-acrylic blend – combines warmth with durability and easier care.
  • Self-striping 8ply yarn – can add gradual colour changes across the textured pattern.
Important: Match the original tension before beginning. A different tension may alter the finished 150cm length and approximately 30cm depth, as well as the drape of the cowl.

Customisation Ideas

  • Use a solid colour to emphasise the slip-stitch texture.
  • Choose a self-striping yarn for gradual colour changes throughout the cowl.
  • Use a tonal variegated yarn for a softer blended effect.
  • Choose a neutral shade for an everyday layering accessory.
  • Make a coordinated beanie in the same yarn for a matching winter set.

To retain the original dimensions and pattern repeat, keep the cast-on count of 276 sts, the six-round pattern sequence and the approximately 28cm working depth unchanged.

Care Instructions

Follow the washing and care instructions provided on the ball band of the yarn used.

  1. Sew in all ends securely before washing.
  2. Wash using the method and temperature recommended for the selected yarn.
  3. Avoid excessive agitation when using wool or fibres prone to felting.
  4. Gently reshape the cowl while damp.
  5. Lay flat to dry where appropriate to help maintain the finished dimensions.
  6. Store folded rather than hanging to help prevent stretching.
