How to Knit the Ribbed Bow Headband

Knit a simple textured headband with a gathered bow-style centre using Lincraft Grasslands 8ply. The headband is worked flat in a repeating knit-and-purl pattern, then joined into a loop and gathered at the seam.

The pattern includes both a narrow and wider finishing option and is designed to fit a 56cm head.

Alternative Yarns

The original pattern uses Lincraft Grasslands 8ply. When choosing an alternative yarn, select an 8ply or equivalent yarn that can achieve the original tension of 22 sts and 30 rows to 10cm over stocking stitch using 4.00mm needles.

Suitable Yarn Types

  • 8ply wool yarn – provides warmth and natural elasticity.
  • 8ply wool-acrylic blend – combines warmth with durability and easier care.
  • 8ply acrylic yarn – an easy-care option with good colour availability.
  • Machine-washable 8ply wool – suitable for an everyday winter headband.
  • Soft 8ply cotton blend – may create a lighter version with less warmth.
Important: Match the original tension before beginning. A different tension may alter the finished fit for a 56cm head and change the width and structure of the bow effect.

Customisation Ideas

  • Choose the narrow option by folding the Headband in half during finishing.
  • Choose the wider option by leaving the Headband as is.
  • Use a contrasting yarn wrap at the centre to highlight the bow shape.
  • Use a solid neutral colour for an everyday accessory.
  • Choose a bright or jewel-tone yarn for a statement headband.

To retain the original fit and proportions, keep the cast-on count of 40 sts, the row sequence and the 40cm finished headband length unchanged.
