How to Knit the Stubby Holder

Knit a fitted stubby holder using Lincraft DK 8ply yarn. The design is worked in two pieces: a ribbed side piece shaped at the neck and a separately knitted base piece, which are joined together during finishing.

The finished holder measures approximately 22cm in circumference and 20cm in height, with a button-and-loop closure at the top.

Alternative Yarns

The original pattern uses Lincraft DK 8ply. When choosing an alternative yarn, select an 8ply or equivalent yarn that can achieve the original tension of 22 sts and 30 rows to 10cm over stocking stitch using 4.00mm needles.

Suitable Yarn Types

  • 8ply acrylic yarn – an easy-care option with good colour availability.
  • 8ply wool-acrylic blend – provides structure with additional warmth and resilience.
  • 8ply cotton yarn – creates a firmer fabric with clear stitch definition.
  • 8ply cotton-acrylic blend – combines structure with easier care.
  • Machine-washable 8ply yarn – a practical choice for an accessory that may require regular cleaning.
Important: Match the original tension before beginning. A different tension may alter the approximate 22cm circumference and 20cm height, affecting how closely the holder fits around the bottle.

Customisation Ideas

  • Use team colours for a personalised sporting-themed holder.
  • Choose a contrasting button to add a decorative detail at the top.
  • Use a wooden or novelty button for a different finish.
  • Add simple embroidery to the Side Piece after knitting and before final assembly.
  • Make several in different colours for gifts or entertaining.

To retain the original size and fit, keep all stitch counts, row counts, neck shaping and base shaping unchanged when making decorative customisations.
