P101 Cabled Hem Beanie

A fun update to the classic, cuffed beanie, we’ve created a pattern with a simple, cabled hem. Worked in the round from hem to crown, the cabling is worked from the wrong side before being turned up for the cuff. This pattern is great for knitters who want to try out a new technique or want to create something a little special. Shown here is our medium sized beanie.

Please use only the yarn specified. Another yarn is likely to yield different results. Quantities are approximate as knitting styles may vary between knitters. Check the ball bands to ensure all yarn is from the same dye lot.

NOTE: The cabled hem is working with the cable detail facing inwards, so that when turned up shows the correct side.
NOTE: This pattern is written for our S Adult’s size, all stitch counts and references for other sizes are written in brackets for easy reference. They are as follows, S (M - L)

NEEDLES & EQUIPMENT:

A 4.00mm circular knitting needle, 40cm or longer OR
A set of 4.00mm double pointed needles.
A Cable Needle.
Wool needle for sewing in ends.

TENSION:

22 sts and 30 rows to 10cm over stocking st, using 4.00mm needles.

KNITTING ABBREVIATIONS:

  • K: Knit
  • K2tog: Knit 2 Together
  • Kfb: K1 into the fr of the next stitch on the needle but do not slide the stitch off, K1 into the bk of the same stitch on the needle and slide the stitch off the needle
  • P: Purl
  • P2tog: Purl 2 Together
  • Pfb: Purl 1, Purl tbl to increase by 1
  • Sl1: Slip One Stitch purl wise
  • wyif: With Yarn in Front
  • wyib: With Yarn in Back
  • ssk: Slip, slip Knit (Left Slanting Decrease)

SPECIAL ABBREVIATIONS:

  • 2/2 PLC: sl 2 sts onto cn, hold in front, P2, P2 from cn, same as a right side 2/2 LC

BEANIE

Casting On:

Using 4.00mm dpns or circular knitting needles, cast on 90 (100 - 110) sts dividing evenly between three needles if using dpns. We recommend using the long tail method for a clean edge. Join to begin working in the round taking care not to twist.

Turn Up Cabled Hem

Round 1 (RS): *P2, K2, P4, K2, repeat from * to end.
Rounds 2-4: Repeat Round 1.
Round 5: P2, K2, 2/2 PLC, K2, repeat from * to end.

Repeat Rounds 1-5, twice more

Repeat Rounds 1-4, once more.

Next Round: Purl all sts, this is to create an even fold in the rim of the beanie.

Beanie:

Knit every round, without shaping until piece measures 14 (16 - 16) cm from the purl row.

Crown Shaping:

Next Round: *K8, K2tog, repeat from * to end of round ... 81 (90 - 99) sts
Next Round: Knit all sts.
Next Round: *K7, K2tog, repeat from * to end of round ... 72 (80 - 88) sts
Next Round: Knit all sts.
Next Round: *K6, K2tog, repeat from * to end of round ... 63 (70 - 77) sts
Next Round: Knit all sts.
Next Round: *K5, K2tog, repeat from * to end of round ... 54 (60 - 66) sts
Next Round: Knit all sts.
Next Round: *K4, K2tog, repeat from * to end of round ... 45 (50 - 55) sts
Next Round: Knit all sts.

Next Round: *K2tog, repeat from * to last st, knit the last st of the round together with the first st of the next ... (5) sts
Next Round: Knit all sts.

Break yarn and draw through the remaining 9 (5 - 5) sts, pull tightly and fasten off.

FINISHING

Weave in all ends, steam and stretch gently into shape.

Alternative Yarns

When substituting Makr Cosy Wool, choose a yarn that can achieve the pattern tension of 22 sts and 30 rows to 10cm over stocking st, using 4.00mm needles.

Suitable alternatives may include smooth wool, wool-blend or synthetic yarns with good stitch definition so the cabled hem remains clearly visible. A yarn with some elasticity will also help the beanie retain its shape and provide a comfortable fit.

Important: Match the specified tension and finished fabric rather than relying only on the yarn weight description. Work a tension swatch before beginning, as a substitute yarn may alter the finished circumference, stretch and yarn quantity required.

Customisation Ideas

  • Work the beanie in a solid colour to highlight the cabled hem detail.
  • Use a contrasting colour for the cabled hem and main body.
  • Choose a tonal or lightly heathered yarn for subtle colour variation.
  • Add a pom pom to the crown after finishing.
  • Adjust the length of the main beanie section before beginning Crown Shaping for a slouchier fit.

Care Instructions

Follow the care instructions provided on the yarn label used for the project. Wash gently using a method suitable for the selected fibre and reshape while damp.

Dry flat where recommended to help maintain the crown shaping and cabled hem. Take care when steaming to avoid flattening the cable detail, and store the beanie folded or laid flat to help retain its shape.
