Please use only the yarn specified. Another yarn is likely to yield different results. Quantities are approximate as knitting styles may vary between knitters. Check the ball bands to ensure all yarn is from the same dye lot.
NEEDLES:
A 4.00mm circular knitting needle, 80cm.
A 3.50mm circular knitting needle, 80cm.
A pair of 4.00mm knitting needles.
Wool needle for sewing in ends.
Hat elastic.
Stitch markers.
TENSION:
22 sts and 30 rows to 10cm over stocking st, using 4.00mm needles.
KNITTING ABBREVIATIONS:
- K: Knit
- K2tog: Knit 2 Together
- Kfb: K1 into the fr of the next stitch on the needle but do not slide the stitch off, K1 into the bk of the same stitch on the needle and slide the stitch off the needle
- P: Purl
- P2tog: Purl 2 Together
- Pfb: Purl 1, Purl tbl to increase by 1
- Sl1: Slip One Stitch purl wise
- wyif: With Yarn in Front
- wyib: With Yarn in Back
- ssk: Slip, Slip Knit (Left Slanting Decrease)
BLOOMERS
Cast On:
Using 4.00 mm needles cast on 16 (16 - 18 - 18) sts.
Work 2 rows of stocking st. Cont in stocking st, cast on 3 sts at beg of every row until there are 28 (34 - 54 - 36) sts, then 4 sts at beg of every row until there are 52 (58 - 62 - 68) sts. Place these stitches on the circular needles, placing markers at each end.
Repeat above to create the front and back crotch panels, with both on the circular needles join to begin working in rounds. Make sure they are both facing RS out and continue working in the round ... 104 (116 - 124 - 136) sts.
Work in stocking st in the round until work measures 9 (11 - 12 - 14) cm from beg.
Dec by 1 on either side of the marker every 4th round, 3 times ... 92 (104 - 112 - 124) sts.
Cont working stockinette st in the round until work measures 14 (16 - 17 - 19) cm from beg.
Next Round: K2 (0 - 0 - 0), *K2tog, K3 (3 - 4 - 4), rep from * to last 5 (4 - 4 - 4) sts, K2tog, K3 (2 - 2 - 3) ... 74 (84 - 94 - 104) sts
Work 1 more round, Kfb into every stitch. Using a tapestry needle and a length of waste yarn, loop through every second st on your needles. These stitches are for the skirt over-layer of this pattern.
Waistband:
Begin to work the round onto 3.50mm circular needles, changing needle size. When working the first row of the ribbing, work the first st and then every other, dropping the st that has been secured on waste yarn.
Row 1: *K1, P1, repeat from * to end of round.
Last row forms a rib pattern.
Work a further 7 rows in rib, cast off in rib.
SKIRT
Picking Up Stitches:
Slide all the sts from the waste yarn onto 4.00 mm circular knitting needles ... 74 (84 - 94 - 104) sts
Work 1 round of stocking st, placing markers at the beginning of the round and after 37 (42 - 47 - 52) sts
Next round: K4 (4 - 5 - 5), *Kfb, K3 ( 3 - 4 - 4), rep from * to last 2 ( 0 - 4 - 4) sts, Kfb, K1 ( 3 - 3 - 3) ... 92 (104 - 112 - 124) sts
Work two rounds even.
Inc 1 st ea at the centre front, centre back and at each side seam, on the next row and every 5th row until there are 108 (128 - 128 - 140) sts
Then inc in the same manner on every alt (3rd - 3rd - 4th) row until the skirt has 124 (144 - 156 - 168) sts.
Work 1 Row, inc by 4 ( 0 - 0 - 0) sts distributing evenly around the next round ... 128 (144 - 160 - 168) sts
Ruffles:
Round 1-2: work 2 rounds stocking st,
Round 3: *K1, YO, K2, P1, K1, P1, K2, YO, repeat from * to end
Round 4: *K5, P1, K4, repeat from * to end.
Round 5: *K1, YO, K3, P1, K1, P1, K3, YO, repeat from * to end
Round 6: *K6, P1, K5, repeat from * to end
Round 7: *K1, YO, K4, P1, K1, P1, K4, YO, repeat from * to end
Round 8: *K7, P1, K6, repeat from * to end
Round 9: *K1, YO, K5, P1, K1, P1, K5, YO, repeat from * to end
Round 10: *K8, P1, K7, repeat from * to end

FINISHING
Picot Edge Cast Off:
Round 13: *Cast on 2 sts at the beg of the next row using a cable cast on. Cast off 4 sts as normal. Sl the 5th st purl wise back onto the LN needle. Repeat from * to end. Taking care not to put sts too tight as this will make the picots too small.

Alternative Yarns
When substituting Makr Baby Soft Print, choose a soft yarn that can achieve the pattern tension of 22 sts and 30 rows to 10cm over stocking st, using 4.00mm needles.
Suitable alternatives may include soft baby acrylic, merino, wool blends or other smooth baby yarns with enough elasticity to retain the waistband and bloomers shape. A printed or self-striping yarn can recreate the colour effect of the original project.
Customisation Ideas
- Use a self-striping or printed yarn to create automatic colour changes through the skirt.
- Work the bloomers and skirt in contrasting colours for a two-tone finish.
- Use a contrasting colour for the waistband or picot edging.
- Add a decorative ribbon through the waistband area, ensuring it is securely attached and suitable for baby wear.
- Make coordinating versions in different sizes as a handmade baby gift.
Care Instructions
Follow the care instructions provided on the yarn label used for the project. Wash gently using a method suitable for the selected fibre and reshape while damp.
Dry flat where recommended to help maintain the bloomers shaping, waistband and ruffled skirt. Take care not to stretch or flatten the picot edge during washing or blocking, and ensure any elastic remains in good condition.
