How to Knit a Square Scarf & Blanket

Create a colourful knitted scarf or blanket using simple garter stitch squares. This easy knit project is designed so everyone can participate, with individual squares knitted separately and then sewn together to create a larger finished piece.

Each square is knitted using two strands of Makr DK yarn held together, allowing colours to be mixed and matched. Join 6 squares to create a scarf or 49 squares to create a blanket.

  • Choose a yarn suitable for holding two strands together.
  • Check your tension before making multiple squares.
  • Consider colour combinations when selecting replacement yarns.

Tension

Using 8mm needles and two strands of DK yarn held together:

13 stitches x 10 rows in plain knit (garter) stitch = 10cm x 10cm

Knitting Abbreviations

  • K: Knit
  • St(s): Stitch(es)

Technique Explanation

Garter Stitch

Garter stitch is created by knitting every row. This produces a textured fabric with rows of ridges on both sides and creates a stable square shape.

Using Two Strands of Yarn

Each square is knitted using two strands of DK yarn held together as one strand. Combining different colours creates a unique blended effect throughout the scarf or blanket.

Joining Squares

Once all squares are completed, arrange them into the desired layout and sew the edges together using a wool needle.

Full Knitting Instructions

Making the Squares

  1. Using the cable cast-on method, cast on 24 stitches using 8mm needles.
  2. Hold two strands of DK yarn together throughout the square.
  3. Work plain knit garter stitch for 38 rows.
  4. Continue until the square measures approximately 22cm x 22cm.
  5. Leave approximately 30cm of yarn at the beginning and end for sewing squares together later.
Helpful hint: Complete one square first and check the measurements before making the remaining squares. Adjust needle size if your tension differs significantly.

Finishing

Creating the Scarf

  1. Line up 6 squares vertically.
  2. Sew the edges together neatly using the leftover yarn tails.
  3. Weave in all remaining ends.

Creating the Blanket

  1. Arrange 7 squares horizontally.
  2. Repeat until you have 7 rows of 7 squares.
  3. Sew the vertical edges together.
  4. Continue joining until all 49 squares are connected.
  5. Weave in all remaining ends.

Helpful Tips

  • Experiment with different colour combinations to create a unique design.
  • Keep each square the same size to make joining easier.
  • Check tension regularly when creating multiple squares.
  • Sew squares together using a neat mattress stitch or invisible seam where possible.
