Construction Overview

The plant hanger is created in five stages:

  1. Knit the circular base.
  2. Work the mock macramé body pattern.
  3. Divide the work to create two handle sections.
  4. Create the i-cord hanging loops.
  5. Add the finishing tassel.

Make the Base

  1. Hold two strands of Colour 1 yarn together.
  2. Leave a 30cm yarn tail for sewing later.
  3. Cast on 4 stitches.
  4. Work the first row of the mock macramé pattern: 1 knit stitch at selvedge, then repeat yarn over and purl two together.
  5. Next row: Knit into the front and back of the first stitch, work the pattern repeat, then knit into the front and back of the final stitch.
  6. Continue increasing at the beginning and end of every row until there are 26 stitches.

Shape the Base

  1. Continue the pattern row: Knit into the front and back of the first stitch, work the mock macramé pattern, then knit the final two stitches.
  2. You should have 28 stitches.

Work the Body

  1. Continue working the mock macramé pattern.
  2. Begin and end each row with one knit stitch.
  3. Continue for 10 rows.
  4. Change to Colour 2 on row 7.
Helpful hint: Keep your tension even throughout the mock macramé section. The open texture allows the hanger to stretch around different pot sizes.

Shape the Handles

The knitting is divided into two sections to create the hanging cords.

  1. Knit the first 14 stitches for one side.
  2. Turn your work.
  3. Continue working only these stitches.
  4. Knit two together at the beginning and end of every row until 4 stitches remain.
  5. Next row: Knit two together twice, leaving 2 stitches.

Create the I-Cord Handle

  1. Knit 2 stitches.
  2. Slide the stitches back onto the left needle without turning.
  3. Knit the two stitches again.
  4. Repeat until the cord measures approximately 50cm.
  5. Cast off, leaving a 10cm yarn tail.

Complete the Second Handle

  1. Transfer the remaining 14 stitches onto another needle.
  2. Join yarn at the outer edge of the work.
  3. Repeat the shaping instructions used for the first side.
  4. Create the second i-cord handle.

Finishing

  1. Seam the sides of the hanger up to the colour change section.
  2. Tie the handle threads together at the top.
  3. Neaten loose threads by darning them into the seams.

Make the Tassel

  1. Cut yarn lengths approximately 60cm long.
  2. Continue cutting until you have a bundle approximately 5cm wide.
  3. Fold the strands in half.
  4. Wrap a strand around the centre point to create a secure coil.
  5. Feed a thread through the centre of the coil and tighten.
  6. Trim the ends evenly.
  7. Sew the tassel securely to the centre bottom of the hanger.
