How to Crochet the Square Guy

Crochet a colourful square-shaped toy with simple arms, legs and embroidered facial details. The body is made from two matching crocheted pieces, while the arms and legs are worked separately before being sewn together, stuffed and attached.

Small amounts of contrasting yarn can be used to personalise the eyes, facial features and tuft of hair.

You Will Need

• 1 ball of Double Knitting yarn by Lincraft in main colour (MC)
• Half a ball of Double Knitting yarn by Lincraft in colour 2 (C2)
• Small amounts of other colour yarns
• 4mm crochet hook
• Large eyed needle
• Polyester fibre toy filling

BODY (make 2)

Make 32 ch using MC

1st row: Miss 2 ch, dc to end.

2nd row: ch 2, dc to end

Repeat 2nd row 36 more times

End off

ARMS (make 4) using C2

Make 8 ch using C2

1st row: Miss 2 ch, dc to end

2nd row: 2 ch, dc to end

Repeat 2nd row 13 more times

16th row: Miss 2 ch, dc to end (4 ch)

17th row: Miss 2 ch, dc to end (2 ch)

Slip stitch the last 2 sts and end off.

LEGS (make 4) using C2

Make 10 ch

1st row: Miss 2 ch, dc to end

2nd row: 2nd row: 2 ch, dc to end

Repeat 2nd row 9 more times

12th row: Miss 2 ch, dc to end (6 ch)

13th row: Miss 2 ch, dc to end (4 ch)

14th row: Miss 2 ch, dc to end (2 ch)

Slip st the last 2 sts and end off.

TO MAKE UP

Sew the front and back of the body together leaving the lower edge open and stuff with polyester toy filling, sew across the bottom. Sew the 2 pieces of the arms & legs together and stuff. Sew the arms to the side of the body and the legs to the bottom.

EYES (make 2)

Make 3 ch.

Join with a slip to form a circle

Next round: 2 ch, 10dc into circle. Sl st last dc to top of 2 ch

Next round: 2 ch dc into each dc from 1st round sl st to 1st dc and end off.

Hand sew to the front of the body.

Using a scrap of red yarn embroider a French knot to centre of eyes embroider a straight stitch for the nose and stem stitch a mouth.

Tie a tuft of yarn to the centre top of head by folding several pieces of yarn in half and pulling it through with a crochet hook. Then put these pieces through the loop formed.

Alternative Yarns

The original pattern uses Lincraft Double Knitting yarn for the main colour and second colour. When choosing an alternative, select a DK or equivalent yarn that creates a firm fabric when worked with a 4mm crochet hook.
