How to Make a Cute Fabric Bookmark

Create a colourful fabric bookmark that wraps securely around the pages of a book. The elastic loop stretches around the cover, while the button keeps the bookmark neatly in place.

This medium-difficulty sewing project takes approximately 30 minutes and is a practical way to use a small piece of patterned fabric.

What You Will Need

Materials

• 1 piece of patterned fabric measuring 40 cm × 10 cm
• 20 cm of hat elastic
• 1 large 29 mm button
• Matching sewing thread
• Embroidery thread for attaching the button

Equipment

• Sewing machine
• Fabric scissors
• Hand-sewing needle
• Iron and ironing board
• Safety pin or turning tool, optional

Sew the Fabric Strip

1. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise with the right sides facing together.
2. Sew along the long raw edge to create a fabric tube.
3. Turn the tube right side out.
4. Centre the seam along the back of the strip and press it flat.

Prepare the Ends

1. Fold the raw edges at both short ends towards the inside of the fabric tube.
2. Press the folded ends flat to create neat finished edges.

Attach the Elastic

1. Tie the two ends of the elastic together securely to create a loop.
2. Insert the knotted end of the elastic into one open end of the fabric strip.
3. Position the knot inside the fabric so it will be hidden.
4. Topstitch across the end several times to secure the elastic firmly.
5. Topstitch the opposite end closed.

Add the Button

1. Position the button on the closed end opposite the elastic loop.
2. Thread the hand-sewing needle with embroidery thread.
3. Sew the button securely through the fabric layers.
4. Fasten the thread firmly on the back and trim any excess.

Use the Bookmark

Place the fabric strip between the pages, wrap the elastic around the book and stretch it over the button. Adjust the bookmark so it sits flat without bending the pages.
