How to Make a Patchwork Bunny Cushion

Create a cosy patchwork cushion using coordinating bunny-themed fat quarters. This intermediate sewing project combines simple patchwork, careful seam matching and an envelope-style back to create a decorative cushion cover for a 40 cm insert.

The finished cushion features a mixed patchwork design that adds handmade charm to a lounge, bedroom or seasonal display.

What You Will Need

Materials

• 2 Multi Fuzzy Spring fat quarter packs
• Matching thread
• 40 cm cushion insert
• 2 coordinating backing pieces measuring 47 cm × 30 cm each

Equipment

• Sewing machine
• Fabric scissors
• Iron and ironing board
• Rotary cutter
• Cutting mat
• Quilter’s square or ruler
• Pins

Cut and Arrange the Patchwork Squares

1. Use a quilter’s square and rotary cutter to cut nine equal squares from the assorted bunny-themed fabrics.
2. Cut two coordinating pieces of fabric measuring 47 cm × 30 cm for the back of the cushion.
3. Arrange the nine patchwork squares into three rows of three. Move the fabrics around until you are happy with the balance of colours and prints.

Sew the Patchwork Panel

1. Pin the three squares in the first row together with right sides facing. Sew the seams.
2. Repeat for the second and third rows.
3. Press the seams flat with an iron.
4. Pin the first and second rows together, carefully matching the vertical seams. Sew the rows together.
5. Attach the third row in the same way, matching the seams before sewing.
6. Press the completed patchwork square and all seams flat.

Rearrange the Patchwork Design

1. Measure the completed patchwork panel and cut it into four equal quarters.
2. Rearrange the four sections by flipping the first and last quarters to create a more varied patchwork pattern.
3. Pin the four sections together, matching the seams where possible.
4. Sew the sections back together and press the finished front panel flat.

Prepare the Cushion Back

1. Fold and press one long edge of each 47 cm × 30 cm backing piece to create a neat hem.
2. Stitch each hem securely.
3. Position the two backing pieces over the patchwork front with right sides facing. Arrange the hemmed edges so they overlap across the centre to form the envelope opening.

Assemble the Cushion Cover

1. Pin one backing piece to the top edge of the patchwork panel and sew it in place.
2. Attach the second backing piece to the opposite edge in the same way.
3. Trim any fabric extending beyond the edges of the patchwork front.
4. Pin the remaining side edges securely and sew around them.
5. Turn the cushion cover right side out through the envelope opening.
6. Gently push out the corners and press the cover before inserting the 40 cm cushion insert.
