How to Crochet the Granny Square Mittens

Crochet a pair of fingerless granny square mittens using two colours of Lincraft Kimana yarn. Each mitten is made from two granny squares joined together with an opening left for the thumb, then finished with a ribbed cuff and a simple double crochet edging.

The pattern includes both Child and Adult sizes, with the Adult size adding an extra granny square round.

Special Abbreviations

mr = magic ring (alternatively 3ch, sl st into beg ch and tr into ring).

fptr = front post treble stitch.

bptr = back post treble stitch.

MITTENS

Granny Squares (make 4):

Using C1 and 4.50mm hook, make a mr.

1st round: 3ch (counts as tr throughout), 2tr in ring, 2ch, *3tr in ring, 2ch, rep from * 3 times. Sl st in top of 3ch to join.

2nd round: Sl st to first 2ch sp, [3ch, 2tr, 2ch, 3tr] in same sp, 1ch, * [3tr, 2ch, 3tr] in next sp, 1ch, rep from * twice, 1ch. Sl st in top of 3ch to join.

3rd round: Sl st to first 2ch sp, [3ch, 2tr, 2ch, 3tr] in same sp, 1ch, 3tr in next sp, 1ch,* [3tr, 2ch, 3tr] in next sp, 1ch, 3tr in next sp, 1ch, rep from * twice. Sl st in top of 3ch to join.

Adult Size Only:

4th round: Sl st to first 2ch sp, [3ch, 2tr, 2ch, 3tr] in same sp, 1ch, 3tr in next sp, 1ch, 3tr in next sp, 1ch, * [3tr, 2ch, 3tr] in next sp, 1ch, 3tr in next sp, 1ch, 3tr in next sp, 1ch, rep from * twice. Sl st in top of 3ch to join.

All Sizes:

Fasten off.

Join 2 granny squares along one side. Join along opposite side for 2cm at top and 2cm at bottom, leaving a thumb opening. Repeat for 2nd Mitten.

Cuffs:

Using C2, join yarn to bottom of Mitten at seam.

1st round: 3ch, tr into each st to end. Join with sl st.

2nd round: 3ch, 1bptr, [1fptr, 1bptr] to end. Join with sl st.

Repeat 2nd round, 3 times.

Fasten off. Repeat for 2nd Mitten.

FINISHING

Using C2, join yarn to top of Mitten at seam.

Work 1 round of dc.

Fasten off. Repeat for 2nd Mitten.

Sew in all ends.

Alternative Yarns

The original pattern uses Lincraft Kimana yarn in two colours. When choosing an alternative yarn, select a yarn that works comfortably with a 4.50mm crochet hook and creates granny squares of a similar size and drape.

• 8ply acrylic yarn – a practical, easy-care option with good colour availability.
• 8ply wool blend – provides warmth and elasticity for a comfortable fit.
• Machine-washable 8ply wool – suitable for warm everyday mittens with easier care.

• Two coordinating leftover yarns – suitable provided both yarns are similar in weight and produce compatible fabric.

Customisation Ideas

• Use contrasting colours for the granny squares and cuffs to emphasise the construction.
• Create a tonal pair using two shades from the same colour family.
• Make each granny square in different colours for a more playful patchwork effect.
• Use a neutral cuff colour with brighter granny square motifs.
• Add a decorative edging around the top after completing the original finishing round.
• Adjust the thumb opening position slightly during joining to suit the wearer, while retaining the original 2cm joins at the top and bottom as a guide.

To retain the original proportions, keep the granny square round counts, cuff rounds and joining instructions unchanged when making decorative customisations.

Care Instructions

Follow the washing and care instructions provided on the ball band of the yarn used.
