Tension

Pattern note: This pattern uses UK crochet terminology. A magic ring is used to begin each triangle motif, but you can also create a loop by chaining 6 stitches and joining with a slip stitch.

Construction Overview

The Issy Triangle Scarf is made in three simple stages:

  1. Make individual granny triangle motifs.
  2. Repeat the motif in four colours.
  3. Join the triangles together to create the finished scarf.

Make the Granny Triangle Motifs

Make 16 triangle motifs in each colour, creating a total of 64 triangles.

Round 1

  1. Using your first colour and a 4mm crochet hook, make a magic ring.
  2. Chain 6. This counts as a treble crochet and chain space.
  3. Work 3 treble crochet stitches into the ring.
  4. Chain 3.
  5. Repeat the treble crochet and chain sections twice more.
  6. Finish with 2 treble crochet stitches into the ring.
  7. Slip stitch into the top of the third chain to join.

Round 2

  1. Slip stitch into the centre of the first chain space.
  2. Chain 6.
  3. Work 3 treble crochet stitches into the same space.
  4. Chain 1.
  5. In the next chain space, work: 3 treble crochet, chain 3, 3 treble crochet.
  6. Repeat for the remaining chain spaces.
  7. Finish with 2 treble crochet stitches in the beginning space.
  8. Slip stitch into the top of the third chain to join.

Fasten off and weave in the ends. Repeat until you have completed all triangle motifs.

Join the Triangle Motifs

Arrange your triangles before joining to plan your colour layout. The pattern joins the motifs in groups of four triangles wide and sixteen triangles long.

  1. Place the triangles in your preferred colour arrangement.
  2. Using matching yarn, join the motifs together.
  3. Use 4 chain stitches between each motif to create the joining sections.
  4. Continue joining until all triangles form one long scarf.
Joining tip: Lay all motifs out before sewing them together. This makes it easier to balance the colours and create an even pattern throughout the scarf.

Finishing

  1. Check all joins are secure.
  2. Sew in all remaining yarn ends using a wool needle.
  3. Gently reshape the scarf if required.
